**Chapter 3: A Goddess's Will**

1639 Words
It wasn’t long after Ember’s first shift that everything came crashing down. Zane’s emotions were a whirlwind of rage, desire, and guilt. He tried to push Ember away, tried to ignore the bond, but the pull was too strong. The bond was undeniable. But then came the night of the annual Mate Meet and Greet. Ember stood there, dressed in a gown that accentuated the new strength in her figure, the curves of a woman who had fully embraced her wolf. She was surrounded by other males, all eager to claim her. Zane saw red. “I’m not your mate, Zane,” Ember said, her voice cold as she met his gaze across the clearing. Zane’s heart shattered. He wanted to argue, to claim her, but her words held the power of finality. She had already rejected him, and the truth stung more than he could bear. He wanted to pull her into his arms, to tell her everything, but all he could do was watch as she turned away, walking toward another alpha who had claimed her attention. --- That night, Zane's parents found him alone, pacing under the stars. His father, the current alpha, placed a hand on his shoulder. "You've done nothing wrong, son. You’ve been too proud, too stubborn to see what the Goddess Celene has already joined together. Ember was always your mate. Don't reject her. She is the one the moon chose for you." Zane’s throat tightened. His parents’ words were like a weight on his chest. The pack’s future, his future as alpha, was tied to Ember—and yet, all he could feel was the rage and the rejection of his own heart. Zane stared at the stars above, his gaze fixed on the full moon that cast its silver glow across the forest. The moonlight was both a reminder of his lineage and his curse. The same light that had illuminated his pack's path for generations now felt like a burden, its pull growing stronger with every passing moment. It was as if the Goddess Celene herself was watching, waiting for him to make his choice. His father’s hand on his shoulder was firm, grounding him, but it couldn’t settle the storm raging inside. "You can’t outrun fate, Zane." His father’s voice was steady, a stark contrast to the whirlwind inside Zane’s chest. "I know you’re struggling. You’ve spent years running from the truth. But this is bigger than both of you. It’s bigger than your pride." Zane pulled away from his father’s touch, turning to face him with a sharpness that surprised even himself. "I didn’t ask for this," he spat, his voice hoarse with frustration. "I didn’t ask to be tied to her. You don’t understand what this means for the pack." His father’s face hardened, his brows furrowing in disapproval. "What are you saying? That you’d rather break the bond than embrace what’s been given to you?" Zane took a deep breath, trying to control the fury that bubbled inside him. His wolf—his other half—was furious, demanding that he claim what was his. But Zane was torn, his mind still caught in the web of his past resentment toward Ember. "I’m not ready to be tied to her. You saw her tonight, Father. She’s—she’s not *one of us*. She doesn’t belong here. She’s not strong enough." His father’s eyes softened, a quiet understanding passing between them. "Zane, strength is more than just power. The true strength of a Luna comes from her heart, from her ability to lead alongside you, to balance you. You’ve spent too long looking at her through a lens of superiority, judging her based on who she was, not who she’s becoming. Celene has seen something in her that you’ve failed to see." Zane clenched his fists at his sides. He knew his father was right. He had always underestimated Ember, dismissing her as weak, as something to be tolerated rather than revered. She had been an outsider, someone who had never fit in with the pack’s traditions, and Zane had always taken it for granted that someone else—someone stronger, more dominant—would be his mate. But now… Now it was clear that fate had chosen differently. "She’ll never forgive me," Zane murmured, his voice low with the weight of his own guilt. "I’ve treated her like she didn’t matter. How can I fix that? How can I make her see that I want her now, after everything?" His father sighed and placed both hands on his son’s shoulders, looking him squarely in the eyes. "You have to start by accepting her, Zane. Not just as your mate, but as a person. She’s been waiting for you, just as you’ve been waiting for her, whether you admit it or not. You can’t claim her out of duty, or out of pride. You have to claim her because you *want* her. Because she’s your equal. Because Celene has bound you both together." Zane’s breath caught in his throat, and for a moment, he felt an overwhelming wave of doubt. What if he couldn’t? What if Ember didn’t want him anymore? What if the bond was already broken, severed by his own stubbornness? Before he could voice his thoughts, a voice from behind startled him. "You’re wrong, Father." Zane turned, his gaze snapping to the newcomer. Ember stood at the edge of the clearing, her eyes fixed on him with an intensity that made his heart pound. The way she stood, her shoulders squared, her chin lifted with pride, was a striking contrast to the girl he had known just a few years ago. Now, she was a woman—a force in her own right, no longer hiding behind the books or the timidness that used to define her. "You don’t get to decide what’s right for me," she continued, her voice sharp but measured. "I didn’t come here for your approval, Zane." She addressed him directly, ignoring his father’s presence completely. Zane opened his mouth to speak, but Ember cut him off. "You think I’m weak? That I’m not good enough for you?" She stepped closer, her eyes flashing with a fire he hadn’t seen before. "You’ve always thought that, haven’t you? Always looked down on me like I was some second-class wolf. But you don’t get to decide who I am anymore. You don’t get to decide what I want." Her words hit him like a physical blow, but it wasn’t anger that coursed through him. It was something much more terrifying. Something that made his wolf howl in agreement. "You *are* my mate," Zane said, the words coming out before he could stop them. His voice was raw, thick with emotion. "But you’re right. I’ve treated you like I was better than you. Like you weren’t enough. And I—" He stopped himself, realizing the magnitude of what he was admitting. He had always been the alpha, the one everyone looked up to. But here, in front of Ember, he was just a man with a broken heart and a shattered pride. Ember’s gaze softened for a moment, but then the walls went up again, cold and distant. "I don’t need you to fix me, Zane. I don’t need your apology. I don’t need *anything* from you." The finality in her voice stung more than he cared to admit, but Zane didn’t back down. His wolf snarled in his mind, demanding that he *take* her, that he force her to understand the bond. But Zane knew better than that. His father’s words echoed in his head—*You can’t claim her out of duty, or pride. You have to claim her because you want her.* He stepped forward slowly, cautiously, until he was standing just a few feet away from her. Ember didn’t back away, but she didn’t reach out either. Her eyes were guarded, like she was bracing for whatever might come next. "I was wrong," he said, his voice low, thick with emotion. "I never should have treated you like that. And I’m sorry. If you can find it in yourself to forgive me, I want to try—*try* to make this work. Not because we’re fated, but because I want to be with you. Because you’re *right*—I’ve been blind to what’s been right in front of me all along." Ember’s expression remained unreadable for a long moment. Zane held his breath, waiting for her response. The silence between them was thick, heavy with the weight of their past and the uncertainty of their future. Finally, Ember spoke. "I don’t know if I can trust you again, Zane. I don’t know if I can ever look at you the same way." She shook her head, her voice barely a whisper. "But I’ll try. I’ll *try* if you really mean it. If you’re not just saying the words because you’re scared of what might happen if you don’t." Zane nodded, his heart hammering in his chest. This wasn’t a victory. This was the beginning. But it was a beginning he was willing to fight for. "I mean it, Ember. I’ll fight for you. I’ll fight for us. And whatever happens, we’ll do this together." Ember looked at him for one long, intense moment before finally nodding, though her expression was still guarded. "We’ll see, Zane. We’ll see." --- As the night wore on, the sounds of the Mate Meet and Greet continued to echo through the forest, but for Zane and Ember, the world had narrowed to just the two of them. And while the future was uncertain, one thing was clear: the Goddess had spoken. Their fates were entwined, whether they liked it or not. And they would have to figure it out—together. ---
