**Later That Day**

Ember had avoided him all week. And yet, Zane couldn’t escape the pull that kept drawing him to her. Every time she passed him in the halls of the packhouse or during training, her scent lingered in the air, intoxicating him, even though he knew he couldn’t act on it—not yet. She was still too distant, too closed off. But Zane wasn’t going to wait anymore. He found her in the woods that evening, just beyond the pack’s borders, where she often went to train alone. Her back was to him as she practiced her shifts, her movements fluid but intense, as if she were trying to outrun the world itself. He watched her for a moment, his breath caught in his throat at the grace with which she moved, the strength in her body that he had underestimated all these years. Finally, he stepped forward, his footfalls breaking the silence between them. "Ember," he called, his voice low, but certain. She stopped, but didn’t turn around. Instead, she tilted her head slightly, as if acknowledging his presence without fully facing him. "What do you want, Zane?" His heart pounded in his chest as he took another step closer, but he made no move to touch her. He wouldn’t push her. Not yet. "I came to apologize." Her shoulders stiffened, but she didn’t respond right away. She was still so guarded. Zane took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. "I’ve been a fool," he continued, his voice thick with regret. "For years, I treated you like you didn’t matter. Like you weren’t worthy of my time or attention. I’m sorry, Ember. I was wrong." Her back remained turned, but he could see the tension in her posture, the way her hands clenched at her sides. "You’ve always been so sure of yourself," she said, her voice soft but bitter. "But when it comes to me… you’ve never really *seen* me, have you?" Zane’s chest tightened, and for the first time, he felt the weight of his own failures. "No, I haven’t. But I *see* you now, Ember. And I need you to know that I want to change. I want to do better. For you. For us." Ember slowly turned to face him, her eyes unreadable. But in them, Zane could see a flicker of something—a glimmer of hope, of vulnerability, that made his heart ache. She didn’t speak for a long time. Zane’s nerves were stretched taut, the seconds stretching into what felt like eternity. Finally, she spoke, her voice barely a whisper. "I don’t know if I can trust you again, Zane. But if you really mean it… If you’re willing to fight for this, fight for me, then I’ll try." Zane stepped forward, closing the distance between them. He reached out, his hand trembling slightly as he cupped her cheek, feeling the warmth of her skin under his fingers. "I will fight for you, Ember," he promised, his voice steady now, full of determination. "I won’t make the same mistakes again. Not with you. Not with *us*." For a moment, their eyes locked, and the bond between them surged to the surface. The pull was undeniable now. Ember’s lips parted, her breath catching, but she didn’t pull away. And that, in itself, was more than enough. ---
