Chapter 4: Shattered Trust

My heart slammed against my ribs as Ethan’s voice came through the door. I stood frozen, one hand still clutching the mysterious note, the other hovering near the lock. Part of me wanted to scream at him to go away. Another part, the stupid, aching part that still remembered his arms around me, longed to fling the door wide and demand answers. The ultrasound picture on the fridge seemed to watch me, a silent reminder of what I carried. What he could never have. With trembling fingers, I turned the knob. The door swung open and there he stood, tall and disheveled, his usually perfect dark hair messy, eyes stormy gray and bloodshot. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days. Good. Let him feel even a fraction of my pain. “You have some nerve showing up here,” I whispered, my voice hoarse. Tears burned behind my eyes but I refused to let them fall. Not in front of him. Ethan stepped forward without waiting for permission, his broad shoulders filling the doorway. The familiar scent of his cologne hit me. Cedar and spice. It nearly broke me. “Ava… God, I’ve been losing my mind searching for you. Why did you disappear like that? No note, no call, nothing.” I backed up until my legs hit the edge of the couch, crossing my arms tight over my stomach. Protecting what was mine. “Why? You really have the guts to ask me that after I watched you propose to another woman in front of my eyes? In the middle of what was supposed to be our special night?” His face twisted with something deep. Regret mixed with fury. He ran a hand through his hair, pacing the small space like a caged animal. The apartment suddenly felt too tiny for both of us and all the hurt swirling between. “It wasn’t what it looked like. Sophia… that proposal… it was never real. My family forced my hand. There are debts, threats from old rivals who could destroy everything I built. They had leverage on my mother’s illness, on company secrets that could send people to prison. I thought I could fix it quietly, buy time, then come clean to you.” I laughed, but it came out bitter and broken. “Buy time? By getting on your knee for her while I stood there holding baby shoes for our child? You didn’t even come after me, Ethan. You stayed there smiling like I was nothing.” He stopped pacing, his gaze dropping to my hands still shielding my middle. For a long moment he just stared, confusion flickering across his sharp features. Then understanding dawned, slow and devastating. His voice dropped to a whisper. “Ava… are you…?” The words hung heavy in the air. I didn’t confirm it, but my silence and the protective way I held myself said enough. His knees seemed to buckle. The powerful CEO who commanded boardrooms sank onto the edge of my lumpy couch, burying his face in his hands. When he looked up again, tears glistened in those steel gray eyes. Actual tears from a man who once told me emotions were weaknesses in his world. “I never wanted any of this,” he murmured, voice thick with emotion. “Every second with her felt like chains tightening around my throat. But you… you were my freedom. The only real thing in my life. And now… a baby? Our baby?” His hand reached out instinctively, but I stepped back, pain slicing through me fresh and sharp. “Don’t touch me,” I snapped, though my own resolve wavered at the raw longing in his expression. “You chose her in that moment. You shattered everything we had. I left to protect this child from a father who could discard us so easily.” Ethan stood slowly, closing the distance but not crowding me. His fingers brushed my arm lightly, sending unwanted sparks through my skin. “I was trying to shield you from the darkness. Those people threatening my family wouldn’t hesitate to come after you if they knew how much you meant to me. But when I saw you there… God, Ava, it destroyed me. I’ve torn the city apart looking for you. I ended things with Sophia the next morning. She knew it was fake too. Just another pawn in this twisted game.” I wanted to believe him. The ache in my chest screamed for me to fall into his arms, let him make it all better like he used to. But the image of that diamond sliding onto her finger replayed in my mind, cruel and vivid. “Words are cheap, Ethan. You had three years to tell me about these threats. Instead you kept me in the dark like some fragile doll. Now I’m here, starting over with nothing but determination and this tiny life inside me. I won’t let you waltz back in and break us again.” He flinched like I had slapped him. For several heartbeats, silence stretched between us, thick with unsaid confessions and shared memories. The rain outside picked up, mirroring the storm in both our souls. Ethan’s shoulders slumped, vulnerability cracking through his usual armor. “Let me prove it. Let me show you the documents, the recordings of the blackmail. I’ll dismantle every lie if you give me a chance. This baby… our child deserves to know both parents. And I deserve a chance to fight for the family I never knew I had until tonight.” Tears finally spilled down my cheeks. I hated how much his pain mirrored mine, how his voice still wrapped around my heart like a warm blanket even after everything. Part of me yearned to tell him every detail. The morning sickness. The ultrasound heartbeat. The lonely nights wondering if I’d ever feel whole again. But trust? That had been shattered into pieces too small to gather quickly. “I need time,” I whispered, wiping my face. “Space. You can’t just appear and expect forgiveness.” Ethan nodded, though torment filled his gaze. He pulled out his phone, typing something quickly before showing me. “I’ll stay at a hotel nearby. This is my new number. Call me anytime, day or night. But please… don’t run again. I can’t lose you twice.” He turned toward the door, hesitation in every step. Just as his hand touched the knob, he glanced back, eyes locking onto mine with fierce intensity. “I still love you, Ava. More than power, more than money, more than any deal. That never changed.” The door clicked shut behind him, leaving the apartment echoing with emptiness once more. I sank onto the couch, sobs wracking my body as all the emotions crashed over me. Relief mixed with anger, love tangled with betrayal. Could I ever trust him again? Could our baby grow up caught between two worlds? I picked up the mysterious note from the floor, reading it again. Whoever sent it knew too much. And now Ethan had found me too. What other shadows lurked in the corners of this mess? As I tried to steady my breathing, my prepaid phone buzzed with an unknown message. Heart pounding, I opened it. “He found you faster than expected. But the real danger isn’t Ethan. The people who forced that proposal are coming for the heir. Leave town tonight or you both die.” Attached was a blurry photo taken from outside my apartment window just minutes ago. Showing Ethan leaving… and a dark figure watching from across the street. My blood ran cold. This wasn’t over. Not even close.
