The Beast Chooses
For one endless heartbeat…
Nobody moved.
The ruined Council chamber was buried beneath dust and shattered stone. Ancient pillars leaned at impossible angles, cracks spiderwebbed across the marble floor, and the air smelled of blood and crushed rock.
At the center of the destruction stood the Sovereign.
A colossal black wolf.
His coat was darker than the night sky, broken only by ancient silver markings that pulsed faintly beneath his fur like veins of moonlight. His silver eyes swept slowly across the chamber, calm and terrifying, as though every soul present had already been judged.
No one dared breathe.
The Council remained on one knee.
Even after centuries of serving the throne, instinct held them there.
The Sovereign’s presence was overwhelming.
Not because he demanded obedience.
Because every wolf’s blood recognized its king.
Lucien Ashcroft stood alone.
His gray wolf form was leaner than the Sovereign’s, built for speed rather than dominance. Blood dripped from a deep wound across his shoulder, staining the broken marble beneath him.
He stared at the black wolf.
Then…
He laughed.
A low, breathless laugh.
“So…”
“The stories weren’t exaggerated after all.”
The Sovereign did not react.
Lucien slowly circled him.
“I spent years wondering whether the throne had made you weaker…”
He smiled.
“Instead…”
“It made you into a monster.”
The Sovereign’s silver eyes never left him.
Lucien’s smile sharpened.
“I almost missed you, old friend.”
Without warning…
He lunged.
The chamber exploded into motion.
Gray and black collided with a deafening crash.
Stone columns shattered like dry branches.
The impact hurled both wolves across the chamber, tearing through ancient walls that had stood untouched for centuries.
Seraphine screamed as fragments of rock rained around her.
She stumbled backward, shielding her head.
Another violent crash echoed through the underground hall.
She could barely see them through the dust.
Only flashes.
Gray.
Black.
Claws.
Stone breaking.
A roar powerful enough to shake the foundations of Draven Global Tower.
The lights flickered.
Somewhere far above…
Employees paused at their desks as coffee rippled inside untouched cups.
The building trembled once.
Then again.
No one knew why.
Back below…
Lucien twisted away from another devastating strike.
His claws slashed toward the Sovereign’s neck.
The black wolf shifted effortlessly.
Lucien’s attack struck empty air.
The Sovereign answered with one sweeping blow.
Lucien was thrown through an ancient stone archway.
The wall collapsed around him.
Silence.
For two seconds…
Nothing.
Then…
The rubble exploded outward.
Lucien emerged coughing, blood staining the gray fur around his mouth.
His breathing had grown heavier.
“So…”
He panted.
“You really have surpassed me.”
The Sovereign stepped forward.
One measured step.
Another.
He never rushed.
He never wasted movement.
Every motion carried absolute certainty.
Lucien understood.
That certainty had always been Caelan’s greatest strength.
It was also what made him dangerous.
Lucien smiled through the blood.
“You always did fight like a king.”
The Sovereign answered with silence.
Seraphine pressed herself against a cracked pillar, unable to tear her eyes away.
This couldn’t be real.
None of it.
A week ago she had been unemployed.
Now…
She was watching two impossible creatures battle beneath the headquarters of the world’s largest corporation.
Her heartbeat thundered inside her chest.
One thought echoed louder than the rest.
Mr. Draven…
No.
Caelan.
Was this truly him?
The same man who corrected grammar during meetings.
Who drank black coffee without sugar.
Who never smiled.
Who had quietly handed her his jacket when the boardroom air conditioning had malfunctioned on her second day.
How could that man…
Be this?
Lucien’s eyes suddenly shifted.
Not toward the Sovereign.
Toward Seraphine.
He smiled.
“There you are.”
The Sovereign’s posture changed instantly.
His body moved almost imperceptibly.
One step.
Just enough to stand between Lucien and Seraphine.
Lucien noticed.
His laughter echoed through the ruined chamber.
“So it’s true.”
The Council exchanged uneasy glances.
Lucien tilted his head.
“I couldn’t believe the reports.”
He looked directly into the Sovereign’s silver eyes.
“The man who once taught me that feelings make rulers weak…”
“…is protecting a human.”
The Sovereign let out a deep growl.
The sound rolled through the chamber like distant thunder.
Loose stones slid across the floor.
Several elders lowered their heads even further.
Lucien nodded slowly.
“I know exactly where to strike now.”
Before anyone could react…
He sprinted.
Not toward the Sovereign.
Toward Seraphine.
She froze.
Fear rooted her to the floor.
Lucien was only feet away.
Then…
The Sovereign vanished.
A violent gust tore through the chamber.
Lucien barely had time to turn before an immense black form slammed into him from the side.
The collision blasted both wolves through another wall.
The ceiling groaned.
Ancient cracks raced overhead.
Damien’s eyes widened.
“Sovereign!”
The white-haired elder looked upward.
His face lost all color.
“The chamber is collapsing!”
Another deafening impact shook the foundations.
A massive section of the ceiling gave way.
Stone crashed toward Seraphine.
She looked up.
Too late.
She couldn’t escape.
The falling slab was enormous.
Then…
The Sovereign abandoned the fight.
He leaped.
The colossal black wolf crossed the chamber in a single bound and threw himself over Seraphine.
The stone crashed onto his back.
The impact shook the entire underground complex.
Dust swallowed everything.
Silence.
Seraphine lay beneath the shelter of warm black fur.
She expected crushing weight.
Pain.
Darkness.
Instead…
Nothing touched her.
The Sovereign had taken the full force of the collapse.
Slowly…
The dust settled.
Cracks spread across the enormous slab resting over his shoulders.
With one powerful movement…
The Sovereign rose.
The stone split in half and crashed harmlessly to either side.
Seraphine stared in speechless disbelief.
He had protected her.
Again.
Across the chamber…
Lucien watched the scene.
He wasn’t angry.
He was smiling.
A slow…
Satisfied…
Smile.
“I was right.”
His voice echoed through the ruined hall.
“You chose her.”
The Sovereign slowly turned.
His silver eyes burned with quiet fury.
Lucien took a deliberate step backward.
Not in fear.
His mission was complete.
“I didn’t come here to kill you.”
He looked at the kneeling Council.
“I came to prove something.”
His gaze returned to the Sovereign.
“And now every elder has seen it.”
“The king can bleed.”
“The king can love.”
“The king can hesitate.”
His smile widened.
“And kings who hesitate…”
“…lose kingdoms.”
A deafening howl answered him.
Not of fear.
Of warning.
The Sovereign advanced one step.
Lucien held up a small obsidian sphere.
Damien shouted instantly.
“Everyone down!”
Lucien crushed it in his hand.
Black smoke erupted across the chamber.
It spread unnaturally fast, swallowing pillars, walls, and every source of light.
Growls echoed from every direction.
Then…
Nothing.
The smoke cleared.
Lucien Ashcroft was gone.
Only deep claw marks remained carved into the ancient stone floor.
The chamber fell silent.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
The Council slowly lifted their eyes toward the Sovereign.
Not with admiration.
With concern.
The white-haired elder rose first.
His voice was quiet.
“You broke the First Law.”
Another elder stood.
“You revealed yourself.”
A third added,
“You chose one human…”
“…over the law that has protected our kind for centuries.”
The Sovereign remained motionless.
Then the silver markings beneath his fur slowly dimmed.
His massive form shimmered.
Bones shifted.
The colossal wolf gradually became a man once more.
Caelan Draven stood where the beast had been.
His expensive suit hung in torn strips.
Blood ran freely down one arm where the collapsing stone had struck him.
His chest rose and fell with controlled breaths.
Yet despite the wounds…
His silver eyes remained steady.
He looked only at Seraphine.
She stared back at him.
Her face was pale.
Her hands trembled uncontrollably.
This was the man who had interviewed her.
The man she’d secretly admired.
The man she’d begun to trust.
And now…
Everything she believed about him had shattered.
She took one slow step backward.
Then another.
Caelan didn’t follow.
He simply watched.
Pain flickered across his face for the briefest moment.
Almost too quickly to notice.
Seraphine swallowed hard.
When she finally found her voice…
It came out as barely more than a whisper.
“…What are you?”
The question echoed through the ruined chamber.
Caelan held her gaze.
A long silence stretched between them.
Then, with quiet finality, he answered.
“I’m the truth your world was never meant to know.”
