THE OATH

Enma woke up to the sound of machines. Beeping. Slow. Steady. White ceiling. White walls. The smell of disinfectant. Med bay. His ribs hurt. His head hurt. But the red was quiet. *CRIMSON SYNC: 6%* He turned his head. Aoi was asleep in the chair next to his bed. Still holding his hand. Dark circles under her eyes. Sword leaning against the wall. On the floor, curled up on a blanket, was Hana. She had his other hand. Neither of them let go. Enma didn’t move. He just watched them breathe. Rule 3: Don’t forget. The door opened. A nurse came in. S-Class uniform. She saw Enma awake and froze. “Kazehara-sama is not to be disturbed,” she said quickly. “It’s fine,” Enma said. His voice was rough. “Water.” The nurse poured him a cup. Her hands shook. “You... you broke Floor 5.” Enma drank. “Yeah.” “Headmaster wants to see you. As soon as you’re stable.” “Tell him to wait.” The nurse nodded and left fast. Aoi stirred. “You’re awake.” “Yeah.” She sat up, rubbing her eyes. When she saw he was okay, she exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for days. “You scared me,” she said. “49%.” “I know.” Hana woke up too. She immediately checked his face. “You’re okay? Does it hurt?” “I’m okay,” Enma said. He squeezed both their hands. “Both of you.” Hana smiled, watery. Aoi didn’t smile. She looked tired. “We need to talk,” Aoi said. --- 30 minutes later. Aoi’s private room. Clean. Small. One window. No cameras. Aoi was pacing. Hana was sitting, arms crossed. Enma was leaning against the wall, still sore. “They moved him again,” Aoi said. No preamble. “B7 was a decoy. Jin is somewhere in the Central Spire now. Level unknown.” Enma closed his eyes. “Kuroda.” “Yeah,” Aoi said. “He’s using him as leverage. If you slow down, Jin pays. If you hit 100%, Jin pays.” “So I can’t win.” “You can,” Aoi said. “But not alone. Not at this rate.” She stopped pacing. Looked at him. “I’m going to make a deal.” Enma frowned. “What kind of deal?” “With Kuroda.” Hana shot up. “No! He’ll—” “He’ll listen to me,” Aoi cut her off. “I’m a Kazehara. My family funds 20% of the Wall. He owes us.” Enma stared at her. “What are you giving him?” Aoi didn’t answer for a long time. “My oath,” she said finally. “If you reach Floor 10, I become his. His enforcer. His weapon. I do whatever he says for 5 years.” The room went silent. “No,” Enma said. “You don’t get a choice,” Aoi said. Soft. “If I do this, he gives us Jin’s location. Real location. And 24-hour access. No more games.” “And if I die before Floor 10?” “Then I still serve him,” Aoi said. “But I’ll make sure Jin is safe first.” Hana was crying now. “You can’t. He’ll ruin you.” Aoi knelt in front of her. “Hana. Look at me.” Hana looked up. “I’m already ruined,” Aoi said. “I’m S-Class. I was born in a cage. The only time I’ve felt free was fighting next to him.” She nodded at Enma. “If 5 years of hell gets Jin back and gets you both out, I’ll pay it.” Enma felt something crack in his chest. “Don’t.” Aoi stood and walked to him. She put a hand on his chest. Right over his heart. “Then don’t hit 50%,” she said. “That’s the deal. You climb. You stay human. You get to Floor 10. And I keep my oath.” Enma looked at her hand. At the scar from her grandfather. “Okay,” he whispered. Aoi smiled. Small. Sad. “Good.” --- Two hours later. Headmaster’s office. Kuroda was drinking tea. Like this was a casual meeting. Aoi stood in front of his desk. Enma and Hana behind her. “I want terms in writing,” Aoi said. Kuroda smiled. “Of course, Kazehara. The great house offers its daughter as collateral. How noble.” He slid a contract across the desk. 5 pages. Aoi read every line. Then signed. Kuroda clapped. “Excellent. In return: Asset Jin Kurogane. Location: Central Spire, Floor 44, Cell 12. Visitation: 1 hour per day. Starting tomorrow.” He looked at Enma. “And you, Null. Floor 6 is in 12 hours. New rule: No allies. Solo only.” Enma didn’t react. “Deal,” Aoi said. Kuroda leaned back. “One more thing. If he hits 60% on Floor 6, the deal is void. I take the boy and the girl.” Aoi’s jaw tightened. “Agreed.” They left. In the elevator, no one spoke. Hana was shaking. Aoi was staring at her hands like they belonged to someone else. Enma took her hand. “Thank you.” “Don’t thank me yet,” Aoi said. “Just win.” --- The visitation room was small. Glass wall. One chair on each side. Enma sat. Hands folded. The door on the other side opened. *JIN.* He was smaller. Thinner. But his eyes were the same. Defiant. “Enma!” Jin ran to the glass and pressed both hands to it. Enma did the same. “You’re okay,” Jin said. “You’re really okay.” “I’m okay,” Enma said. “You?” “I’m fine,” Jin lied badly. “They feed me. They don’t hit me. Much.” Enma’s jaw clenched. 15%. “Don’t,” Jin said quickly. “Aoi told me. Don’t get mad. Just get me out.” Enma nodded. He couldn’t speak. “Floor 6?” Jin asked. “Yeah.” “You’ll win,” Jin said. Certain. “Because you’re Enma. And you promised.” The timer beeped. 1 hour was up. Guards came in. Jin pressed his forehead to the glass. “Come get me, big brother.” Then he was gone. Enma sat there for a long time after. Aoi didn’t rush him. --- That night, training. No room. No mats. Just the roof of the Academy. Real sky this time. Stars. Aoi and Enma. Wooden swords. “Rule 5,” Aoi said. “You fight like you have nothing to lose. Because you don’t.” They went at it. Enma lost. Again and again. But his Sync stayed at 20%. 25%. Never higher. At midnight, they stopped. Both bruised. Both breathing hard. Aoi sat on the edge of the roof. Legs dangling. “You know why I did it?” she asked. “Because you’re stupid,” Enma said. Aoi laughed. “Yeah. That too.” She looked at him. “Because when I saw you stand in front of that bot in F-Block, I remembered what it was like to choose something. Not because of duty. Because it was right.” She nudged him. “Don’t make me regret it.” “I won’t.” They sat in silence. “Floor 6,” Aoi said. “It’s called The Oathbreaker. It’s psychological. It’ll show you your worst failure.” Enma looked at his hands. “Jin.” “Probably,” Aoi said. “So remember: it’s not real. Hurt is real. The rest is lies.” Enma nodded. Aoi stood. “Get sleep. You’ll need it.” She started to walk away. Then stopped. “Enma.” He looked up. “If you see me in there,” she said quietly. “Don’t trust me. Not the fake one.” She left. Enma stayed on the roof. Holding the gray stone from Hana. _“She sold herself for you,”_ the King whispered. _“You owe me.”_ Enma didn’t answer. He just closed his eyes. --- Floor 6. 6 AM. *THE OATHBREAKER.* The door opened to darkness. No lights. No sound. Just Enma and his breathing. Then a light. In the center of the room: A table. Two chairs. At the table: *ENMA* and *JIN.* But not his Jin. This Jin was 15. Older. Scarred. And he was crying. “Enma,” the older Jin said. “You were late.” Enma stopped. 12%. “What?” “You were late,” Jin repeated. “They came for me. You weren’t there. They took me to B7. They—” He pulled up his sleeve. Burns. Cuts. “You promised,” Jin said. “You said you’d come.” Enma’s chest hurt. 25%. “It’s not real,” Enma said. “Aoi said—” “AOI?” Jin laughed, bitter. “She sold you out. She works for Kuroda now. Did you know that?” The lights changed. Now it was Aoi. In black armor. Standing behind Kuroda. Smiling. “Contract fulfilled,” Aoi said. “The Null is yours.” Enma’s vision went red. 40%. “Stop,” he said. Jin stood. “You failed me, brother. Just like you failed Hana. Just like you’ll fail everyone.” He pulled out a knife. “So I’m doing it for you.” He raised the knife to his own throat. Enma moved. He was across the room in one second. He grabbed Jin’s wrist. *CRIMSON SYNC: 48%* The knife clattered to the floor. Jin looked up at him. And smiled. Wrong. “Too late,” Fake Jin whispered. The room shook. Mirrors cracked. Enma realized. He let go. Stepped back. The Fake Jin melted into glass. The lights came back. One room. One chair. One Enma. And in the corner: *THE OATHBREAKER.* It wasn’t a person. It was a creature made of smoke and mirrors. No face. Just a voice. “You resisted,” it said. “Interesting.” Enma walked to it. 50%. The creature raised a hand. Enma didn’t flinch. He thought of real Jin. Of Hana’s stone. Of Aoi’s oath. He punched. The creature shattered. Silence. *WINNER: KUROGANE ENMA. TIME: 3 MINUTES 02 SECONDS. PEAK SYNC: 50%.* The door opened. Aoi was there. She ran to him and checked his eyes. His hands. “50%,” she said. “You hit 50.” “But I didn’t break,” Enma said. Aoi pulled him into a hug. Hard. “You i***t. You beautiful idiot.” Enma hugged her back. “Is it done? The deal?” Aoi nodded into his shoulder. “Yeah. Jin’s location is ours. Visitation starts tomorrow.” Behind them, Kuroda watched on a screen. He paused it on Enma at 50%. Eyes clear. Hands steady. “Containment,” Kuroda murmured. “He’s containing it.” He smiled. “Floor 7 will be fun.” --- Later. Med bay again. Enma was sitting up. Eating. For once, real food. Hana was telling him about F-Block. Aoi was reading reports. The wrist device beeped. *MESSAGE FROM CENTRAL SPIRE: VISITATION APPROVED 0800 DAILY.* Enma set his food down. “Tomorrow.” Aoi nodded. “Tomorrow.” Hana took his hand. “We’re close.” Enma looked at both of them. “Yeah. We are.” Outside the window, the Wall stretched up. 94 floors to go. But for the first time, it felt possible. *CRIMSON SYNC: 5%* The King was quiet. For now. ---
