Chapter 10

It was 5 O'clock and I was sitting down on one of the chairs in the corner of the shop. It was one of my less busy days. Mia had gone back home and I was busy going through some magazines when the door to the shop opened and Gabriella walked in. "Mavis." She called running over to hug me. "What a beautiful place you own." She added looking around. "Thank you. Please sit down." I returned the hug and motioned towards the chair in front of me. "What are you doing here?" "Well I need your help. I want you to work your magic once more." She smiled and it looked like she could explode any minute from now. "Magic?" I asked "Yes. Well it's my parents anniversary and I'd like you to bake them a cake." My lips curved in a smile. "Congratulations! When do you need it?" "Tomorrow evening." She stated That’s in less than twenty four hours. "So soon?" I asked "I know, I'm sorry. The thing is, we're throwing a surprise party and the whole thing is so last minute, I didn't get enough time to plan. I hope you can meet up?" I thought about it for a while. If I took it up and started this night, I would be done before tomorrow evening. "I can but we need to go over a few details quickly." I explained and she hugged me again across the table. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" She smiled. I got up and grabbed a book and pen from the counter and we both went over details like the color of the cake, the size, flavor, payment and the rest. It was almost 6:30pm when we finished. "Thank you again Mavis." "It's nothing." I said gathering up all the notes we made. "I'll be on my way now. Have a goodnight." "You too." I replied and with that she was out of the shop. I walked over to the back and grabbed a bag to pack a few items I would need to bake the cake back at home then I locked the shop and made my way back home in a taxi. When I got home, I pulled out my keys and unlocked the door. Mia was still having her dinner when I walked in. "Hey, you're quite late. Too many customers tonight?" She asked "Just one and she wants a cake." "Oh! What's the occasion?" "Her parents anniversary. We spent about half an hour discussing the details of the cake and you, are going to help. She needs it by tomorrow evening." I explained. "Alright quickly stood up and walked over to help me with the bags in my hand. She placed them on the island and we began baking almost immediately. It was almost 10pm when we finished baking. We kept the two layers in the fridge and Mia went to bed after that while I cleaned up. mind immediately drifted back to Martin. When I finished, I made my way upstairs as well to freshen up and go to bed. ****************** It was Saturday morning, and Mia and I were busy assembling the cake layers together with some icing. “Mavis.” She called “Yes.” “What do you think the party is going to be like? Like the charity gala? I mean they are rich.” I looked at her and laughed. “No Mia. It’ll be much smaller. With their family… and friends.” “Are you going to stay for it?” “No I won’t. I wasn’t invited… not as a guest at least. I’ll just deliver the cake and come straight home.” I replied and we continued icing the cake. ********** Soon it was 6pm and I was on my way to deliver the cake. I decided to take a taxi since I wasn't making a huge delivery. The ride to their house was quick. It wasn't long before we were parked outside the gate. I got down with the cake, and payed the driver. I stood in front of the gate and was just about to pull out my phone to inform Gabriella that I was here but on seeing me, the guards opened up the gates this time without any interrogations. "She's waiting for you inside." He said. "Thank you." I replied and made my way through the huge compound to the front door. I saw a familiar face instructing some guards on what to do. It was the head maid. She finished with them and turned to face me. "Good evening ma'am." She greeted "Good evening. I'm here to deliver this for the party." "Follow me." She replied and lead me into the house. We arrived at two huge mahogany doors. The sounds of chattering could be heard clearly from behind them. The maid opened up the doors and I was met with a room full of people. "Miss Gabriella is inside." "Alright, thank you." I replied before stepping into the room of people. I let my eyes wander, scanning every single face present. It was just like I expected. Filled with rich people. I was still busy staring when… "Mavis!" I heard my name from across the room. I looked around a bit to see Gabriella walking towards me with a huge smile on her face. "You're finally here." She said on getting to me. She looked at the cake in my hands. "And this, it's lovely." She added taking it from me to get a closer look before handing it over to one of the maids. "It's a lovely party."I replied "I know. I hope they'll love it," "They will. You and your brother have put so much effort into it." I added. She smiled while looking back at the guests. "Thank you." "You're welcome." "I should be on my way." I said as I glanced at my watch. "No, please stay. I insist." "I can't. I.. I don't even know anyone here." "You know me, Martin's here too. And Emma as well." She replied. I looked around and I saw him across the room talking with a few other guests. I turned back to look at Gabriella who had a pleading look on her face. It wouldn’t hurt if I stayed for a while, right? What’s the worse that could happen after all? "Alright." I said after a long while of contemplating. "Thank you. I'll go get Emma. She has been dying to meet you." She said and scurried off to get her daughter. I stood in the corner waiting for her to return when the door to the living room swung open, and guess who walked in? Yeah! The girl from the charity event. I guess I spoke too soon!
