Chapter 4

1273 Words
I ran out of the hotel through the back door and into my van. I quickly pulled out Mia's little first aid kit from under the chair and cleaned up my wound before putting a bandage on it. What was I thinking walking around like that. I should have left immediately after delivering the cake but I had to stare at him and ended up ruining someones dress. I should just leave! I started on the van and drove off immediately. Soon enough I was back at the shop. I parked the van right in front of it and walked back home. I pulled out my key from my purse and noticed the heart on the chain had broken in half. It probably happened when it fell at the hotel. Mother had given it to me on my sixteenth birthday at a fun fair. Mia was just eight back then. I wiped a tear that had freed itself and quietly unlocked the door, then I went in and locked it. I heard a few voices from the TV and walked into the parlor to see Mia asleep on the sofa. "Someone did a little late night watching." I laughed turning down the TV volume. I went into her room and grabbed her blanket before covering her with it. Then I went into my room and took a cold shower and changed into something comfortable before flipping down on the bed. I was awake all night staring at the ceiling. I couldn't sleep. I kept on replaying the events of the night while looking at the cut on my hand. "Go to sleep Mavis." I said to myself turning to my side as I pulled the duvet over my body. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep but then I saw him, standing across the room on the other side of the glass and then he looked at me and I jolted back up. You’re not going to get any sleep if you keep on thinking about him Mavis. I stood up from my bed and walked out of my room, deciding to go get a cup of water from the kitchen. I walked into the living room and I saw Mia still fast asleep on the couch so I slowly walked by to the kitchen and grabbed a glass before pouring myself some water. I drank it slowly when... "How was it?" I heard Mia ask causing me to almost choke on my water. "Mia! I thought you were asleep?" I asked cleaning the little water droplets on my lips. "I was but then I heard footsteps." She explained but I was so quiet. "So how was it?" "How was what?" I feigned knowing what she was talking about. "The Gala!" "Oh! It was alright. Delivered the cake and came right home." I said sipping more water. "Oh really! Then what happened to your hand?" She asked looking at the band aid on my right hand. "Oh this? It's just a little scratch from... from uhh... from my hair pins" I lied "I tried to take them off when I got back and this happened. Nothing to worry about though." You little liar. Mia came a bit closer taking of the band aid to examine the cut. She covered it back up after a while. "Really? A hair clip cut you this deep?" She was way to smart! "Spill it!" She demanded "Fine it happened at the party." She nodded her head for me to continue. "I bumped into a lady and spilled the drink all over her. Her phone fell over, she was mad, I picked it up and then this happened!" I explained as quickly as I could leaving out the part about Mr. Grumpy and what the girls said to me. "Wow!" She exclaimed taking a seat on the stool "I know right I messed up. People were watching." She laughed and I glared at her. She simply made a gesture as though she was locking her mouth with a key and then tossing the key away. "Good. Now go back to bed." I said pushing her towards her room. "Goodnight." "Goodnight Mavis." She said back ******************** Few days later… "Mia hurry up, the 8 O'clock news is on, means we're late." I yelled from the living room. "I'm coming, 5 more minutes." She yelled back. I was busy putting on my shoes in the parlor when I heard the reporter on the TV. "Moving on, The 25th of November being yesterday, brought good news to people of New York City as the Acosta group of companies, and other well known sponsors, hosted the 2021 Charity Gala which focused on raising funds for some nonprofit organizations here in the City. Approximately 300 guests were in attendance including famous business man Ma-" I turned of the Tv. The last thing I wanted was to be reminded of that event. "Hey I'm ready." Mia said walking into the parlor. I smiled. "Alright let's go." We left the apartment and walked down to the shop and began our day. Not long after, I was taking the trash out. I had a thrown a few bottles in the recycling bin and was going in to get a few more to dispose when I bumped into someone...again. I rubbed my head from the pain of the impact and looked up to see him standing before me. I felt my mood change and he didn't look happy to see me either. "Are you blind woman?" He asked not sparing a thought for the people walking by. "It was a mistake Mr. Gru... sir." I quickly corrected myself. What was he doing here anyways. I thought he wanted nothing to do with my cafe or anything close to it. I couldn’t help but ask. "Last time I checked this place was way below your standard... so what are you doing here?" He looked at me sternly, his temper visibly rising. "Here to eat your words?" I asked again not knowing where the sudden courage came from. In an instant he grabbed my right hand, the same one with the injury and held it firmly behind me. "You will not talk to me in that tone of voice. I could easily bring down this measly place you call a shop." He said through gritted teeth. "Let go of me!" I winced in pain as he stared at me but his grip only tightened. His hand was directly above the cut on my hand. I painfully tried to wriggle my hand out of his. It took a while but it finally broke free and immediately my hands connected with his face. He had no right to do that to me! I glared at him before running back into the shop and locking it. Martin’s POV: Mavis had managed to free her hands from my grip and in an instant I felt her palms on my face. She slapped me. I balled my fingers tightly into fists probably making my knuckles all white. She had dared to slap me and that too in public. I was going to say something to her when the taste of something metallic lingered around the corner of my lips. I touched the corner of my lips before looking at my hands. It was blood. "She couldn't have slapped me that hard to draw blood?!" I thought and then my gaze wandered off to her hand that was now covered in red. I looked back at her and now she was crying. Before I could say anything she ran off into her cafe. ******************
