Few days later…
It was a Monday morning, few days since I made my delivery at the house of Miss Gabriella.
I was getting ready to open the bakery. I threw on a blue Jean and a pink sleeveless chiffon top with a pair of white sandals. I wore some pearl earrings to match and wrapped my hair up in a pony tail. Then I grabbed my purse before rushing into the living room.
"Mia! Come out." My voice echoed all over the apartment.
"I'll be out in 5 minutes."
"I can't wait, meet me at the store. The key is on the table. Lock the door and keep it under the flower pot before leaving."
"Alright then, bye."
"Bye."
***************
I rushed downstairs and walked down to the shop. It was just three buildings away from where we lived. I unlocked the doors, went in and began my morning rituals. I turned on the lights and opened the window blinds then I went into the kitchen turned on the coffee machine and brought out a few trays of pastries I had left to rise overnight and tossed them into the oven.
Then I went over and switched the closed sign to open. It wasn't long before customers began swarming the place. Mia had also arrived and was behind the counter taking orders while I made and served them. And this was how a typical day in our lives went.
******************
I was busy refilling the cookie stand when Mia ran up to me in excitement making me drop a few cookies.
"Mavis, Mavis!" She called
"What is it Mia? Look what you made me do!"
"I'll clean it up! Just... take a look at who just walked in." She said drawing my attention to two guys in suits across the room. One of them looking awfully familiar.
He does look familiar.
I looked at her. "Who is he?"
"The guy from the big house where we delivered pastries silly."
“Then get that child under control.”
His words echoed in my head. What was he doing here?
"Go take his order." Mia said handing me her notepad, pen and a menu.
"What! No, why?”
"I don’t think I want to face him after what happened at his house.” She said lowly and I understood where she was coming from. I took the notepad, pen and menu from her, adjusted my hair and smoothened my apron before walking out.
Why did I do that?
"Good day sir." I greeted drawing his attention. His friend, had just left the table to go make a phone call outside.
"Here's our menu, what would you like to have?" I said handing him the menu.
He took it from my hands while staring at me carefully.
"Have we met?" He asked
"Yes. We met few days ago when I... delivered a few things for a birthday at your house." I forced a smile gripping the notepad tightly.
"So what would you like to ha-"
I paused as he quickly put the menu back down on the table. His friend had now finished with the phone call and had returned to the table.
“We’re leaving.” Mr. Grumpy said standing up. His friend looked at him clearly surprised.
“But we just got here Martin.”
So he has a name? Martin.
I was just about to say something when he held a finger up indicating I stay quiet.
“I don’t care. I don’t think I want to be seen eating at such a place or anywhere around it with such low standards.” He said drawing the attention of a few customers.
“Why would you say that?” I asked looking at him but he ignored me.
“Dude, don’t be like tha-”
Ignoring his friend as well, Mr. Grumpy stormed out of the restaurant. His friend gave me a sympathetic look before following him out.
I felt tears well up in my eyes but they weren’t tears of pain or sadness, they were tears of anger. The way he disregarded my shop in front of so many customers. Few weeks ago it was my sister and now this.
I quickly walked back into the kitchen throwing the notepad and menu on a nearby table. Mia walked up to me and I wiped my eyes.
“I saw what happened.” She said. I looked at her and smiled lightly.
“It’s okay. He’s just a little grumpy that’s all.” I said and we both went back to work.
