An Offer Too Big To Ignore

The café had grown quieter as the afternoon crowd thinned. Emma stood frozen, her order pad still clutched in one hand. She stared at Adrian, searching his face for the hint of a smile. There wasn't one. "You can't be serious," she said at last. "I am." Emma let out a nervous laugh. "This is some kind of prank, right? Hidden cameras?" Adrian shook his head. "No." She folded her arms. "You just walked into a café, ordered coffee, and proposed to a waitress you barely know.?"!! "When you put it that way, it does sound unusual." "Unusual?" Emma raised an eyebrow. "I'd call it completely insane." For the first time, the corner of Adrian's mouth lifted into a faint smile. "I expected that reaction." Emma glanced toward the kitchen to make sure no one was listening. “then explain." "Can we sit and talk for a few minutes?" Emma hesitated. Her manager noticed the empty dining room and nodded, silently giving her permission to take a short break. She sat across the booth towards Adrian. "Start talking." Emma said curiously. Adrian took a slow breath. "My grandma passed away recently." He paused before continuing. "In her will, she left me her company." "That sounds like good news." "It would be... except there's one condition." Emma leaned forward. "I have less than 20 days to get married." "And if you don't?" "I lose control of the company." Emma blinked. "My grandmother believed I cared too much about work more than I do about my life." (She studied him for a moment). "Was she right?" Adrian looked out the window before answering. "Probably." Silence settled between them. "So"... Emma said, "you need a wife."? "For one year."? "One year?" "It would be a legal marriage. We would attend family gatherings together, public functions, and business dinners. After one year, we will go our separate ways ." Emma stared at him. "And why would anyone agree to that?" "Because I'd pay them." She frowned. "I'm not buying a person," Adrian said quickly. "I'm offering a business deal." Emma laughed softly. "A marriage... as a business deal." "It benefits both of us." "And what exactly do I get?" Adrian reached into his briefcase and placed an envelope on the table. "Read the last page." Emma opened it. Her eyes widened. (The amount written there was far more money than she had ever imagined). Enough to pay her mother's hospital bills,Enough to clear every debt,Enough to rent a small building, and Enough to open the bakery she had dreamed about for years. Her hands trembled. "This can't be real"...rii? "It is." She slowly closed the folder. "I don't even know you." "That's true." "What if you're secretly a terrible person?" "Then you can refuse." Emma couldn't help smiling at the honesty in his answer. "Why me?" Adrian didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked around the café. "I've been here twice." "So?" "I've watched how you treat people." Emma looked confused. "You smiled at every customer." "That's my job." "You comforted a child who spilled juice." "I didn't want him to feel bad." "You answered every complaint politely." (She went silent) "I will try." "You carry a notebook full of bakery ideas." Emma's cheeks warmed. "You noticed that?" "I notice hardworking people." She looked down at the table. "I've worked for everything I've ever had." "I know." "My father passed away when I was sixteen." She said calmly. "I'm sorry." "My mother got sick two years later." She swallowed hard. "Everything changed." Adrian listened quietly. "I gave up university," Emma continued. "Daniel was still a child. Someone had to earn money." "And your bakery?" "It became a dream I kept in a notebook." Adrian nodded slowly. "Then maybe it's time that the notebook becomes a reality." Emma felt something tighten in her chest. No one had ever believed in her dream that easily. Still... "This isn't just a contract”.... "It's a marriage." "Yes." She looked him directly in the eyes. "What happens if one of us falls in love with someone else?" Adrian answered without hesitation. "The contract ends." "And if we start arguing?" "We solve it like adults." "And if your family hates me?" "I'll deal with my family." Emma sighed. "You've thought about all of this"... (Before she could reply, her phone rang, It was the hospital) She excused herself and stepped outside. "Hello?" "Miss June?" "Yes?" "We wanted to remind you that payment for your mother's treatment is due by Sunday." Emma closed her eyes, and stood in silence. "I understand." "If payment isn't received, we'll have to postpone the next treatment." Her heart sank. "Please..." "We're sorry." The call ended. Emma stood on the sidewalk, fighting back tears. She looked through the window. Inside, Adrian sat quietly, giving her space instead of asking, She thought about her mother's tired smile, Daniel's school fees, The notebook is filled with bakery plans. Could she really marry a stranger? Or could she afford not to? Taking a deep breath, she walked back inside. Adrian looked up. "I need one day to think." She said, He nodded. "Take all the time you need." He stood and handed her his business card. Emma accepted it. "If you decide no..." "I'll understand." "And if I say yes?" Adrian met her eyes. "Then tomorrow, our lives change forever." He left the café without another word. Emma watched him disappear into the crowd. The business card felt heavy in her hand. That night, after dinner, she sat with her mother on the small apartment balcony. "You seem worried," her mother said gently. Emma hesitated. "Someone offered me a job today." "What kind of job?" "The kind that could solve all our problems." Her mother smiled sadly. "If it sounds too good to be true..." "It probably is." Em ma looked up at the stars with tears stretched down her cheeks. She knew one thing…that by tomorrow, she would have to make the biggest decision of her life.
