My stomach growled out ravenously at the scent of bread. Daeglan had a dinner roll in his hand. My muddled thoughts quickly focused. Saliva pooled in my mouth, and I lifted myself up to sit cross-legged before him, eyes glued to the roll. “Come just a bit closer, Cat.” He motioned with the roll, and like a dog barking on command, I scooted myself to sit just inches from his legs. “That’s good. First, we need to clean up your arm.” I placed my arm with the truth rune carving into his outstretched hand and waited patiently as he pulled a tube of ointment from his pocket. A hiss slipped passed my lips at the sting from the cream, but I didn’t pull away. If I did exactly as he asked, I’d get to eat. My body felt hollow and weak, and I was ashamed to think of the things I would be willing to do
