Chapter 2

“What the??” [Oh good! You’re finally awake], a robotic voice exclaimed. “Who are you? Show yourself.” Tyrek stood up frantically, looking around his surroundings for where that voice came from. He also noticed a computerized screen floating in front of him. His wolf had always been silent and weak, so he was certain it couldn’t be his wolf. [All that turning is making you look like a crazy person, y’know? So, I’m just going to answer your questions.] Tyrek looked from side to side, but there was no one there. It was 4am and there was no sign of anyone on the streets. [I’m Leo, a medical system that has always been in your subconscious, and soon, I’ll be merged completely with your wolf. In order for that to happen, you’re going to have to complete missions and unlock your skills, gradually.] Leo was the name of his wolf, but a medical system with his wolf? Tyrek moved his hands to his head and hit it a couple of times to be sure he wasn’t dreaming. [I know this is coming off as weird, so if you don’t believe me, check your wounds. There are all healed up. We both know that would typically take at least 3 days to happen, considering how weak your wolf is.] Tyrek suddenly remembered all that ensued earlier between his now ex-girlfriend, Elira and Darius. He checked his wounds, and couldn’t even find a scratch. “How did you do that?” [Like I said, I’m your medical system, Leo. You’re from a rare bloodline with extraordinary medical powers. I’m just here to help you harness it, with missions.] It suddenly felt like his brain had been exposed to more medical knowledge in the short time that he passed out, compared to the knowledge he had in all his 25 years of being. “This can’t be real. I’ve got a lot of questions like, why me? Why did you suddenly decide to get activated today? What extraordinary medical powers am I supposed to have? What type of missions am I supposed to embark on?” Tyrek threw multiple questions into the air, But nothing. Absolutely nothing. There was no response. “Are you there?” No response. He just assumed that he must’ve suffered a concussion from the beating and was hallucinating. After some minutes, he went back to his small apartment. *** He woke up to the incessant ringing of his phone, but he ignored the call and went back to sleep. The phone rang again, and he let out an exasperated sigh before picking it up. Caller ID: Aurelian. Panic flashed across his features, and as if on cue, his eyes settled on the time on his phone- 9am. He immediately jumped up from his bed. Aurelian was his superior at the pack’s hospital and after taking a day off yesterday, he was supposed to report to the hospital at 8am, but he was already an hour late. “You better get yourself down here this moment, or you can kiss your scholarship, goodbye.” Aurelian threatened the moment the line connected. Tyrek dashed into the bathroom and in less than 10 minutes, he had finished getting ready and was his way to the hospital. He ran into the hospital, his hair disheveled, with sweat stains visible on his clothes. But that didn’t matter to him. He just went straight for the changing room and changed into his scrubs, before going to Aurelian’s office. “Look who just decided to join us.” Aurelian exclaimed, staring daggers at him. “I’m sorry, sir. It wouldn’t repeat itself again.” Tyrek tried to smooth things over, knowing he couldn’t afford to make Aurelian pissed off with him. “It better not.” Aurelian eyed him, then gestured towards some papers on his table, and threw them in front of Tyrek, “and what is this?” Tyrek moved closer to the table, looked down at the papers and saw his name on it. It was his reports on herbs for an assessment. “Those are my reports, sir.” “You’re perfectly aware of the consequences of submitting a plagiarized work for an assessment, so why would you plagiarize Darius’ reports and submit it to me, as though it’s an original?” “Plagiarize? I don’t know what you’re talking about, sir.” “Then how do you explain this?” Aurelian yelled at him, because he believed Tyrek was trying to play on his intelligence. That’s when Darius spoke from the other side of the office, “I can’t believe you thought you could reduce all my sleepless nights into some minutes of copying my work and submitting it as your original. I know we’re not friends, but I expected better from you.” Tyrek looked through his reports, and also noticed Darius’ report beside his. He couldn’t believe his eyes. Every word. Every punctuation. They were all the same. All the days and sleepless nights he spent going to the forests, trying to find herbs and carry out experiments on them to see their use and effect for his reports, had all been for nothing. “But this is impossible. I worked on these reports myself, with no one’s help, so how can this be?” Aurelian was done with this back and forth, “Okay, fine. Let’s assume you worked on these reports yourself, then how do you explain submitting it hours after Darius has submitted his?” He couldn’t answer. How could he? It didn’t make sense to him. He tried to retrace his steps while he was writing his reports, and he remembered that the weekend before he submitted, he spent it with Elira. And the morning he was supposed to submit it, Elira had turned off his alarms, so he could ‘sleep better because he looked tired’. Tyrek subconsciously face palmed himself, realizing what Elira had done. “I’m…” “That’s enough!” Aurelian cut him off, “From this week, you’d work together with the nurse’s assistant, as a caretaker, for this behavior you just displayed.” “But I’m supposed to work with the head surgeon starting this week.” Tyrek sighed defeated, almost pleading. “You should’ve thought about that before pulling this stunt.” Aurelian’s attention shifted from them to the other works scattered across his table, “That would be all. You can leave.” Darius left the office almost instantly. “But…” Tyrek tried defending himself again. He had worked hard to move from being a nurse assistant to working with doctors, and now that he was supposed to start working with the head surgeon, this happened. “Get out!” Aurelian commanded. Tyrek sagged his shoulders and left the office. “Tsk, tsk, tsk! I wouldn’t want to be you right now.” Darius mocked, the moment Tyrek was out of the office.
