The Things Heals Slowly

“Sophia?” Adrian’s voice softened immediately through the phone. “You okay?” No. The answer sat heavily inside her chest. Sophia stood alone on the apartment balcony while Jakarta’s city lights blurred beneath tired eyes and warm night wind. Behind her, muffled voices still drifted faintly from inside the apartment. Family. History. Pain. All of it exhausting. Sophia pressed one hand against the railing. “I don’t know.” The honesty came easier with Adrian now. Dangerous. A quiet pause followed on the other end of the call. Then: “Want me to come get you?” The offer hit her chest immediately. Because he sounded sincere. No hesitation. No annoyance. Just there. Always there. Sophia closed her eyes briefly. A part of her wanted to say yes immediately. Another part panicked at how badly she wanted to. “I’m fine,” she whispered automatically. Silence. Then Adrian sighed softly. “That answer should probably be illegal at this point.” Despite everything, Sophia laughed quietly. The sound felt fragile. Adrian noticed. “You crying?” “No.” Lie. Again. “Sophia.” The gentleness in his voice nearly broke her composure completely. Because suddenly she realized something terrifying: Adrian had become the person she instinctively reached for when things hurt. Dangerous. Dangerous man. “I hate this,” she admitted quietly. “What part?” “All of it.” She gripped the railing tighter. “Feeling this much. Caring this much.” The city lights shimmered faintly beneath wet eyes. “I spent years making sure nobody could affect me like this,” she whispered. “And now suddenly one phone call from you feels like relief.” Silence filled the line briefly. Not uncomfortable. Heavy. Then Adrian spoke softly: “Maybe relief isn’t a bad thing.” Sophia laughed weakly under her breath. “You say emotionally devastating things very casually.” “I’ve been told that.” A tear finally slipped down before Sophia could stop it. Annoying. She wiped it away immediately. Unfortunately Adrian heard the uneven breath anyway. “Sophia.” Her chest tightened painfully. “Come downstairs,” he said gently. Not demanding. Not controlling. Just soft certainty. And somehow that affected her more than pressure ever could. Sophia looked back once toward the apartment behind her. Toward the family still carrying years of damage inside cramped rooms and unfinished conversations. Then back toward Jakarta’s endless lights. “I don’t want to go back inside yet,” she admitted quietly. “You don’t have to.” Another dangerous sentence. Because Adrian always spoke like staying hurt was allowed. Like exhaustion was allowed. Like Sophia didn’t have to survive everything perfectly before deserving comfort. No one had ever loved her like that before. The realization hurt unexpectedly. “Where are you?” she asked softly. A pause. Then: “Outside.” Sophia froze. “What?” “I came twenty minutes ago.” Immediate disbelief crashed into her chest. “You’re here?” “You sounded upset.” Like that explained everything. Sophia stared down toward the apartment parking area below. And there he was. Leaning quietly against his car beneath soft yellow lights, phone held against his ear while Jakarta’s night traffic moved behind him. Waiting. Her heartbeat stumbled painfully. Because Adrian never just said he cared. He showed up. Every single time. Sophia swallowed hard against the ache in her throat. Then quietly: “Wait for me.” Adrian’s expression softened immediately. “Okay.” Sophia ended the call before she could lose courage. Behind her, voices still drifted faintly from inside the apartment. Her mother. Vivian. Her father. Years of exhaustion packed into one home. Sophia closed her eyes briefly before grabbing her bag near the doorway. “I’m going for a walk,” she said softly toward the apartment interior. Nobody stopped her. ⸻ Ten minutes later, the elevator doors opened downstairs. Adrian looked up immediately the moment he saw her. And suddenly— Sophia felt emotional exhaustion hit all over again. Because he was really here. Still waiting. Still patient. Always there. The moment she reached him, Adrian stepped closer automatically. “You okay?” No. Again. Always complicated. Sophia stared at him for one long second before suddenly wrapping both arms around him tightly. The movement shocked both of them. Especially her. Because Sophia Lin did not cling to people. Did not seek comfort first. Did not fall apart in front of others. But tonight— she was tired of holding herself together alone. Adrian reacted almost instantly, arms wrapping securely around her waist while one hand moved gently into her hair. No surprise. No teasing. Just warmth. Safety. Sophia buried her face briefly against his chest while emotions hit all at once: anger, grief, fear, relief. And somehow Adrian simply held her through all of it. No fixing. No pressure. No “calm down.” Just there. Her father never knew how to hold pain gently. But Adrian did. And that difference suddenly felt enormous. “I don’t know how to do this,” Sophia whispered quietly against him. Adrian’s hand moved slowly along her back. “You already are.” The softness in his voice nearly hurt. Sophia looked up slowly. Too close now. Too warm. Adrian’s eyes searched hers carefully like he was still making sure she wanted this. Always giving her room to step away. Sophia realized suddenly that she didn’t want distance tonight. Didn’t want walls. Didn’t want control. She just wanted him. The realization settled deeply inside her chest. Terrifying. But true. Sophia kissed him first this time. Not hesitant anymore. Need. Emotion. Exhaustion. Want. Everything tangled together at once. Adrian responded immediately, hands tightening slightly around her waist while the kiss deepened slowly. Still gentle. Always gentle. But no longer careful in the same distant way as before. Because now Sophia was kissing him back like she meant it. The realization nearly unraveled him too. Sophia’s fingers curled into the fabric of his shirt while Adrian guided her backward carefully beneath the covered parking entrance away from the warm night drizzle. The movement sent heat rushing sharply through her chest. Dangerous. Everything felt dangerous tonight. But for once— Sophia didn’t want to run from it anymore.
