The house had gone quiet again, too quiet. The only sound was the ticking of the antique clock on the hallway wall, loud enough to remind me how slow time passed inside this place. I thought he was finished with me for the night, thought maybe I’d finally get to breathe without being under his shadow. But when I slipped into the bathroom to splash cold water on my face, the door swung open, and there he was.
