Chapter 14: When the Truth Comes Out

666 Words
Vanessa Harper had never felt invisible before. She was used to attention—the whispers of admiration, the way people turned when she walked into a room, the certainty that she could bend things in her favor if she tried hard enough. But now, standing in front of her bedroom mirror, she barely recognized the girl staring back at her. Abigail had taken everything. The applause. The admiration. Ethan. Her fingers curled into fists. No, she thought. This isn’t over. The next morning, Crestwood High buzzed with excitement. Posters announcing the winner of the poetry reading were plastered across the notice boards. WINNER: ABIGAIL TAWIAH. Students stopped to read it. Some clapped when she passed. Others smiled and congratulated her. Vanessa watched from a distance, her smile tight and hollow. By lunchtime, her plan was already in motion. Abigail was laughing with Sarah when her phone buzzed. A message popped up from an unknown number. Meet me behind the gym after school. If you don’t want Ethan to get hurt. Her heart skipped violently. “What is it?” Sarah asked, immediately alert. Abigail swallowed. “I think… I think Vanessa’s finally snapped.” Sarah grabbed her arm. “You’re not going alone.” But Vanessa had thought of that too. Another message came through. Come alone. Or everyone finds out what kind of girl you really are. Abigail’s hands shook. Fear crawled up her spine, but beneath it burned something stronger—anger. “She doesn’t get to control me anymore,” Abigail said quietly. After school, the sky hung low and gray as Abigail walked behind the gym. Every step felt heavy. Her mind raced with worst-case scenarios. Vanessa stood there waiting, arms crossed, phone in hand. “Took you long enough,” she said coolly. “What do you want?” Abigail asked, forcing her voice steady. Vanessa raised her phone. On the screen was a carefully edited photo—Abigail and Ethan close together, cropped to look intimate, twisted to suggest something scandalous. “I’m posting this,” Vanessa said. “With a story. About how you manipulated him. About how you played the shy girl to steal him.” Abigail’s chest tightened. “That’s a lie.” “Lies are believable when people want them to be,” Vanessa snapped. “All you have to do is walk away from Ethan. Publicly. Today.” Silence hung between them. Then Abigail straightened. “No.” Vanessa laughed, sharp and cruel. “You think he’ll believe you when everyone turns against you again?” A voice cut through the air. “She doesn’t have to explain anything.” Ethan stepped out from behind the building, fury flashing in his eyes. Sarah followed close behind. Vanessa’s face drained of color. “You—” “I saw your messages,” Ethan said coldly. “I know what you’re doing. And I’m done staying quiet.” Students began gathering—drawn by raised voices. Teachers appeared at the doors. Ethan turned to the crowd. “Vanessa has been spreading lies about Abigail for weeks. She accused her of cheating, tried to ruin her reputation, and now she’s blackmailing her.” Gasps rippled through the students. Vanessa shook her head wildly. “That’s not true! She’s lying!” Abigail stepped forward, her voice clear and strong. “I have proof. Messages. Notes. Everything.” She handed her phone to Ms. Carter, who had arrived just in time. Vanessa’s confidence crumbled. By the end of the day, the truth was out. Vanessa was suspended pending investigation. The rumors died as quickly as they had spread. That evening, Abigail sat on the school steps beside Ethan, exhaustion settling into her bones. “I was terrified,” she admitted. “But… I don’t regret standing up.” Ethan squeezed her hand. “I fell in love with you all over again today.” She smiled through tears. And somewhere, Vanessa realized too late that jealousy had cost her everything.
