Mason POV
When Lucas’s dad called Lyric and Savannah up for the demonstration, everyone froze.
“Hunter, since when does Lyric even come to training?” Lucas asked.
“I have no idea. I’ve never seen her here,” Hunter admitted.
When Delta Sam yelled “Begin!”, the entire pack held its breath. I swear I’d never seen anything like it. She was fast, precise, controlled—and graceful. How did she get this good? She looked like she could actually give me a run for my money. I couldn’t take my eyes off her.
Kane growls in my head She’s strong…and fast.
“I know,” I mutter back, “and I’m shocked.”
Lucas was the first to speak aloud. He let out a low whistle. “Sheesh, Hunter, your sister could give you a run for your money.”
“Shut up, Lucas,” Hunter growled.
Even then, I couldn’t look away from the redhead spitfire in the circle. Then I noticed Summer, glaring daggers at me from the side of the field. We’ve been dating for a year, and somehow, I had never noticed her twin—the one everyone ignores.
Finally, I tore my eyes away and said to the guys, “I’m going to shower and get ready for school. I’ll meet you at the car.” I walked off before I stared any longer at Lyric.
Kane paces in my mind, curious about the quiet youngest beta twin.
Lyric POV
For some reason, the way Mason looked at me gave me butterflies. He’d never looked at me like that before—and today, it felt like he was seeing me for the first time, like everyone else had been blind too.
“Omg, girl, did you see the guys’ faces?” Winter said as we walked back to the packhouse.
“They’re still picking their jaws off the floor,” she laughed.
“Mason couldn’t take his eyes off you. Summer was fuming,” she added.
I rolled my eyes. “Did you see how she was looking at me? She’s going to think I like Mason now.”
“She’s just mad that they noticed you and you’re no longer hidden in the back,” Winter replied.
“Yeah…thanks to Delta Sam,” I muttered.
“Oh, shut up, Lyric. It was time for them to see the real you,” she growled.
We stopped at my floor and agreed to meet in thirty minutes for breakfast in the pack dining room. When I got to my room, Summer was sitting on my bed, arms crossed and eyes blazing.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing with Mason?” she snapped.
“I’m not doing anything, Summer. He was looking at me—I didn’t ask for his attention, nor do I want it,” I said, walking toward my closet.
She grabbed my arm roughly, nails digging in. “Don’t forget where you stand in this pack, Lyric. You think that putting on a little show today changes something?” she hissed in my ear.
“It changes nothing. You are still nothing—the spare, the accident. Do well to remember that.” She spun and left.
I stripped off my training gear, hopped into the shower, and let the hot water wash off the sweat and dirt of the day. Out of the shower, I lotioned my body, pulled on blue skinny jeans, my favorite hoodie, and my New Balance sneakers, combed my hair the best I could, and grabbed my backpack to meet Winter for breakfast.
When we entered the dining room, all conversation stopped. We made our way to the buffet, piled our plates, and found a seat. Whispers floated past us:
“> She’s showing off to get Mason’s attention.”
“I can’t believe she’s trying to steal Summer’s man.”
“Everyone knows Summer will be our future Luna.”
Ignore them, Winter said in the mindlink.
Kind of hard when there are so many whispers, I replied through bites.
I liked it better when people just gave me ugly stares and ignored me.
Before I could react, I noticed the guys entering the cafeteria. Just like when we walked in, all chatter stopped. Jace and Logan were the first to spot us. They grabbed their plates and walked over.
“Hey, lil’ sis,” Jace said. “Where did you learn to fight like that if you’ve never come to training?”
“I’ve been training since I was nine and helping Alpha Liam and Delta Sam train the younger pups since I was twelve. I’ve also been training privately with them since my thirteenth birthday,” I said, annoyed.
They stared, stunned.
“We’ve never seen you at training,” Logan said.
“No, you just never cared enough to notice me,” I snapped.
I looked at Winter. “I’ve lost my appetite, and it’s getting too crowded. I’ll wait for you by your car.” And I walked out of the dining room. How dare they act like this was new when they never gave me a second thought.
Hunter POV
I’ve been thinking about Lyric all morning. Where did she learn to fight like that? How did she get so good?
"You should be proud of our sister," Lars, my wolf, growled in my mind.
“I am proud,” I whispered back, “just…surprised.”
"She’s special", Lars said, before retreating.
When the guys and I walked into the dining room, all chatter stopped.
“What the hell is happening?” I asked.
They shrugged.
We spotted Lyric and Winter at a table in the back. Jace and Logan were already walking over, talking to her, and she snapped at them before storming out.
“What was that about?” Micah asked.
“No idea. Let’s get our food and find out,” I said.
Summer and her crew weren’t around, and for once, I was happy about that. As we sat down, Winter’s anger was palpable. She stood, turned to us, and yelled:
“You guys are all idiots! Today, everyone finally notices Lyric. None of you even gave her a second thought. And you three”—she pointed at me and my brothers—“are the worst. She’s your sister, and you don’t even know her. It’s always been about Summer, while Lyric gets pushed to the background as if she doesn’t exist. You haven’t even celebrated her birthday. Always about Summer and Mason, like it’s all about them. Pitiful!”
And with that, she stormed out. We sat stunned.
Summer’s voice broke the silence. “Hey, guys, why do you all look like you just saw a ghost?”
Mason spoke first. “It’s nothing, babe. Winter just left, and she was mad at me. She yelled at all of us.”
“Oh, I’m sorry you and your sister are fighting, babe,” Summer said.
“Hey, we gotta go,” I said.
“Right, we have to speak with the principal about alpha training,” Mason added.
Once in the car, Lucas spoke first. “So…are we going to talk about what just happened?”
“Is she wrong?” Jace asked.
“None of us saw or noticed Lyric in training, and she’s been there every day,” Lucas said, bewildered.
“How is that possible?” Micah asked.
“As the future leadership, we oversee training…how did we miss her?” Micah adds
“She’s amazing,” Jace whispered.
The rest of the car ride was silent.
