Chapter Five

1042 Words
The city was still asleep when Amelia finally gave up trying to rest. She sat by the window with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, watching the empty streets below. Everything was quiet outside. Inside her head, nothing was. She kept replaying Vanessa's words from the night before. One day you're going to learn the truth. None of us were being honest. “Amelia rubbed her forehead tiredly” What did that even mean? None of us. Not just Daniel. Not just Vanessa. None of us. Who else was involved? The question sat heavy and uncomfortable in her chest. She hated that she was thinking about it. She hated that it was working. Vanessa had betrayed her. She had slept with her fiancé. That should have been enough. That should have been the end of it. Yet those words refused to leave her alone. Every time Amelia tried to push them away, they came back stronger. Eventually, the first rays of sunlight appeared over the city skyline. Morning had arrived. And Amelia still hadn't slept. A dull headache throbbed behind her eyes as she stood and made her way toward the kitchen. Her mother was already awake. A fresh cup of coffee sat waiting for her on the counter. "Morning," her mother said softly. Amelia managed a weak smile. "Morning." Her mother studied her face for a moment but didn't ask questions. Instead, she placed two slices of bread into the toaster and sat down beside her. That was the thing about her mother. She always knew when words weren't needed. For several minutes, they sat together in silence. The morning light slowly filled the apartment. Outside, the city was waking up. Inside, Amelia still felt trapped in the nightmare of two nights ago. "You didn't sleep," her mother finally said. It wasn't a question. "No." "You need to eat something." Amelia looked down at the coffee in her hands. "I'm not hungry." "I know." Her mother placed a plate of toast in front of her anyway. "Eat it slowly." For the first time that morning, Amelia almost smiled. Almost. She picked up a piece of toast and forced herself to take a bite. It tasted like cardboard. But at least it was something. Later that morning, her phone buzzed on the table. The sound immediately made her tense. She looked down. Vanessa. A message. Her mother glanced up from across the room. "Who is it?" Amelia didn't answer right away. Her thumb hovered over the screen. Part of her wanted to delete it without reading. Part of her couldn't. Slowly, she opened it. Amelia, I know you hate me and I deserve it. But please listen to me just once. What happened with Daniel was not what you think. There are things you don't know. Things that started long before that night. There are truths and secrets you're meant to know. I didn't do this to hurt you. I need you to believe that. Please. Amelia read it once. Then again. Her face remained completely expressionless. Her mother watched carefully. "What does it say?" Amelia lowered the phone. "She says it wasn't what I think." Her mother's expression hardened immediately. "She's manipulating you." Amelia looked down at the screen again. Maybe. Maybe not. That was the problem. She didn't know anymore. Her mother sighed. "Sweetheart, you caught her in bed with your fiancé." The words hurt. Even now. "There is no explanation that changes that." Amelia nodded slowly. "I know." But her voice lacked conviction. Because one sentence kept replaying in her head. Things that started long before that night. Why keep saying that? Why not simply apologize? Why not beg for forgiveness? Why keep pointing toward something bigger? Her mother reached across the table and squeezed her hand. "Don't let her confuse you." Amelia nodded again. But the confusion was already there. And growing. The rest of the day passed slowly. Too slowly. She tried distracting herself. She organized a kitchen cabinet. Folded laundry. Sorted through a stack of unopened mail. Nothing worked. Every task ended the same way. Her thoughts drifted back to Vanessa. Back to Daniel. Back to the message. By afternoon, she found herself reading it again. Then later, reading it a third time. Each time she searched for something she might have missed. Some clue. Some answer. Some sign that Vanessa was lying. Or telling the truth. She wasn't sure which possibility scared her more. As evening approached, her mother ordered takeout. Neither of them felt like cooking. They ate quietly in front of the television. Neither paid much attention to what was on the screen. After dinner, her mother went to take a shower. Amelia remained alone in the living room. The apartment felt unusually quiet. Her eyes drifted toward her phone resting on the coffee table. The screen was dark. Silent. Yet somehow it felt louder than anything else in the room. She picked it up. Opened Vanessa's message again. Read every word. Then locked the screen. A frustrated sigh escaped her lips. She hated this. Hated the doubt. Hated the questions. Hated the fact that Vanessa still occupied space in her mind. She should have been done with her. She should have stopped caring. But she couldn't. Not yet. Because despite everything that had happened, one question remained. What was Vanessa talking about? The answer might be nothing. It might be another lie. Another manipulation. Another desperate attempt to escape responsibility. But Amelia couldn't ignore the possibility that it wasn't. She walked to the window and looked out at the city lights. Cars moved through the streets below. People continued with their lives. Everything looked normal. Meanwhile, her entire world had fallen apart. She wrapped her arms around herself. Trying to hold together the pieces. Trying not to think. Trying and failing. Maybe her mother was right. Maybe Vanessa was manipulating her. Maybe there was no secret at all. But if that was true... Why did Vanessa sound so certain? Amelia stared at the reflection in the glass. Then slowly closed her eyes. She wanted to forget the message. Forget Vanessa. Forget Daniel. Forget everything. But deep down, she already knew she wouldn't. Because curiosity had a dangerous way of growing in silence.
