Noah didn't know how he made it back to the cabin. He pushed open the door. The stale smell of wedding alcohol hit him. Confetti littered the floor. The festive decorations stabbed at his eyes. Chloe was on the sofa, playing with a dog. When she saw him, she scooped it up and came over with a smile. "Noah, you're back. Did you find Sister Elena?" She seemed to remember something. "Oh, I was just about to tell you—we found Scout." Noah stared at the dog in her arms. His mind went blank. His voice came out bone dry. "Scout was lost in the mountains. How did you find him?" Chloe smiled, casual and natural. "Oh, right, I was going to tell you. We found him in the garage. He must have found his own way home.
