“Allie.” She and Justin stood face-to-face for several moments. Someone needed to break through the silence, so Allie said, “How are you?” As soon as it was out, she regretted it. How could he be? I know what you meant.” Allie struggled for words. Anything that came to mind would have been wrong. She missed the way things used to be. She missed their friendship. But that was gone, and there was no turning back. “Allie, I’m sorry.” “Me too.” That sounded lame, but so did everything else she thought about saying. He looked away and swallowed. “I know I have only myself to blame for what happened.”
