Sylvia’s POV
“Sylvia, Sylvia!” Eloise called down the hall in panic.
I quickly pushed the handsome stranger off me, my heart racing wildly. My lips still tingled from the unexpected kiss as I hurried to meet Eloise before she came over.
‘Who is that?’ she said.
‘Don’t worry, it is just a random guy I ran into on my way back from the toilet,’ I replied nervously.
‘Are you sure? I was already worried sick about you.’
‘I’m fine but I think we should leave now.’
‘You don’t sound okay, Via. And I thought I just saw you and that guy kissing now.’
‘Kissing! What? No, no. You probably saw wrong,’ I said, avoiding her eyes.
‘Via, I know you well and I know when you are lying.’
‘Okay, okay, let’s get out of here first and I will explain.’
We went back into the club to retrieve our belongings and step out. I noticed it again — the set of eyes on me.
I turned back for a brief second and caught the stranger watching me. A slow, knowing smirk curved his lips, as if he was enjoying my reaction. Heat rushed to my cheeks immediately and I turned away.
When we got back, I rushed into the bathroom to avoid Eloise’s questions.
‘Via, I know you are trying to avoid me, but I will get it out of your tongue.’
She has to know, I sighed.
Then I remembered what just happened a few hours ago. I almost leaned into his kiss before I remembered that he was just kissing that girl; she looked like his girlfriend. And who on earth asks a stranger to marry them on the first meeting?
Yet I couldn’t get his soft lips out of my mind.
He was such a good kisser.
And the worst part was that, for a second, I almost wanted him to kiss me again.
Aghhh Sylvia, concentrate. I guess the alcohol I took was already taking effect. Thank God I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.
I splashed water on my face to wash off my make-up.
I walked back into the room and saw Eloise already sprawled on my bed. I thanked God again because I couldn’t go through another round of interrogation. I helped her take off her heels and moved her to create space for me as well.
‘Via, you still have to answer me tomorrow,’ she murmured in her sleep.
I laid down on the bed trying to get a good rest for the night, but all I could think about was the kiss. Feeling my head twirling, I decided to push my thoughts away and sleep.
Waking up, my head was banging like construction was going on in my brain and my throat felt very dry.
I turned to the side of the bed and didn’t see Eloise. All I saw was a glass of water, a painkiller pill and a piece of note which said:
Brb, I have an emergency. Take the pills and freshen up because you reek of alcohol.
Xo Elo.
I honestly thanked Elo for this kind gesture. I kind of needed it… and a little time to prepare for the incoming interrogation.
After freshening up, I went to the kitchen to get breakfast but realized I had no groceries. I was about to order food with my last money when I heard the doorbell ring.
Could that be Elo? But she has a spare key to my apartment. Why would she use the bell? I thought.
Opening the door, I saw a delivery guy carrying a food pack from the popular five-star restaurant. The logo of Maison Noir was stamped in gold on the packaging. One meal from that restaurant probably cost more than my weekly salary.
What is going on? I haven’t even ordered food, I thought.
‘Good day ma, this is your food delivery,’ the delivery guy said.
‘I think you got the wrong address. Maybe it is next door, because I didn’t order food.’
‘Someone ordered for it to be delivered here. You are Miss Sylvia, right?’
‘Yes, I am. Wait… is it from Elo?’
‘The person didn’t disclose their identity. Just said to deliver and you will know who it is from.’
‘Okay, thank you.’
I collected it from him and dropped it in the kitchen.
Where could Eloise get this huge amount of money to buy food from a five-star restaurant?
Opening the food pack, I saw a note which said:
Good day, ma cerise.
I hope you recovered from last night.
We still have a discussion to finish.
Maison Noir. Tonight.
Don’t make me come looking for you.
For a moment my breath caught.
A cold sweat prickled along my spine.
How did he know where I live?
And why did it suddenly feel like I had just stepped into something I couldn’t escape?
