CHAPTER SEVEN:Wheels Down

1540 Words
Kieran’s POV Wyoming air hits different when you’re bringing home a war. The jet touches down on Blackwood land. Private strip. No towers, no logs, no humans. Just mountains, snow, and 12 black SUVs lined up like a funeral. Council colors. All 12 kingdoms. And at the front, dead center, is her. Queen Victoria Blackwood. My mother. She’s in winter white. Diamonds at her throat. Silver hair perfect despite the wind. She looks like a queen from the old stories — beautiful, cold, lethal. She looks like the woman who told me five years ago, “Omegas don’t wear crowns, Kieran. Handle it.” I feel Aria go still beside me. We’re at the top of the jet stairs. I’m in a black suit. No crown. I haven’t worn it since the Grid alert. Aria’s in scrubs. She refused to change. “I’m a doctor, not a doll,” she’d said. “They want Luna? They get scrubs and blood on my shoes.” Kai is holding my hand. He didn’t ask. He just took it when we stood up. His palm is small, sticky from a lollipop Ryker gave him. Kade is in Aria’s arms. Face buried in her neck. Mr. Woof dangles from his fist. He hasn’t looked at anyone but her since we woke him up. Daddy. He called me Daddy on the jet. I haven’t breathed right since. “Ready?” I murmur to Aria. Not Alpha command. Not King. Just… man. Mate. Begging. Her eyes are surgeon-eyes. Cold. Assessing. She glances at the Council, at my mother, at the 40 enforcers in tactical gear. Then she looks at Kade. At Kai. “Rule four,” she says under her breath. Only I can hear. “You don’t let her touch them. Ever.” Wolf’s Oath. Again. “Never,” I swear. “She comes near them, I end her.” Aria nods once. Sharp. We descend. Aria’s POV The wind bites. Wyoming in October. It smells like pine, snow, and wolves. It smells like him. Twelve Alphas stand in a line. Council of Kings. Roman’s father, King Volkov of the Russian territories, is front left. His eyes are red. Not from grief. From rage. I killed his son. No — Kieran killed his son for me. That’s worse, for men like him. Queen Victoria doesn’t look at the boys. She looks at me. Up. Down. At my scrubs. At the dried blood on my sleeve — Kieran’s blood, from the wrist oath. Her lip curls. “Bastards,” she says. Loud enough for every wolf to hear. “You brought bastards and their w***e omega to Blackwood land.” The air freezes. Every enforcer goes for their weapon. Every King tenses. Wolf’s Oaths don’t allow insults to a King’s mate. But I’m not marked on the neck. Not yet. To them, I’m still nothing. Kieran starts to move. I feel it through the wrist bond — pure, lethal Alpha rage. He’ll kill her. Right here. His own mother. That can’t happen. Not yet. Not like this. I step forward. Before he can. Before the Council can declare war. Kai’s hand slips from Kieran’s. He moves with me. Five years old, ice-blue eyes, already standing between his mom and a Queen. “Mommy?” Kade whispers in my ear. “That lady’s mean.” “Yeah, baby,” I murmur. “She is.” I stop three feet from Queen Victoria. Close enough to smell her perfume. Chanel. Expensive. Like the collar she wanted to put on me five years ago. “Your Majesty,” I say. Doctor Voice. ER Voice. Emergency Voice. The one that makes trauma surgeons shut up and listen. Her eyes narrow. “You don’t speak to—” “My name is Dr. Aria Vale,” I cut in. “Pediatric resident. Chicago General. I’ve coded kids younger than your grandsons. I’ve told mothers their babies are dead. “You will not call my children bastards again.” Gasps. From the Kings. From the enforcers. No one speaks to Queen Victoria like that. Omegas can’t speak to Queens like that. Except I’m not just an omega. I’m Lycan-compatible. First in 200 years. I’m the one whose blood woke up his wolf on that jet. I’m the one whose Shield threw a King across my apartment. “Guards,” Victoria snaps. “Remove this—” “Try it,” Kieran says. He’s behind me now. Not touching. He doesn’t need to. His Alpha aura rolls out like a thunderclap. The snow at our feet melts. “She is under my protection,” he says. Voice gravel. King Voice. “Wolf’s Oath. Blood Oath. She is mine. “And they—” He nods to Kai and Kade. “—are my heirs. Say bastard one more time, Mother. I dare you.” Victoria’s face goes white. Not from fear of me. From fear of him. King Volkov steps forward. “This is illegal, Blackwood. Unregistered heirs. An unmarked omega. Council law demands—” “Council law demands a blood test,” Garrick interrupts, stepping off the jet behind us. He holds up the handheld scanner. “Which we did. On my jet. As neutral party. “99.8% match. Both pups. Pure Alpha line. Blackwood line. “And her—” He points to me. “Lycan-compatible omega. She survived his mark. She’s fated. Council law is satisfied.” Volkov snarls. “She’s still unmarked on the neck. She’s not Luna until—” “She is Luna because I say she is,” Kieran roars. The sound makes the mountains shake. Every wolf in a mile radius drops to one knee. Even the Kings. Even Volkov. Except Victoria. Except me. I don’t kneel. The Luna Who Doesn’t Kneel. It starts now. “Mommy?” Kai tugs my scrubs. I look down. He’s pointing at Victoria. “Is she the bad grandma?” Gods. Kids. A choked sound comes from my left. King Stavros of Greece. He’s hiding a laugh behind his fist. Victoria’s face goes purple. “She is,” I tell Kai. Loud enough. “But we don’t hit grandmas. Even bad ones. We’re better than that.” Kai considers. Then nods. “Okay. But if she’s mean to Kade, I bite her.” Kieran makes a sound. Half growl, half pride. I feel it through the bond. That’s my son. “Enough,” King Edo of the African Territories says. He’s oldest. He stands. “The blood law is met. The King has claimed. The omega lives. The challenge is over. “But Blackwood…” He looks at Kieran. “Your mother broke Moon Law. Insulting fated heirs is punishable by exile. Even for Queens.” Victoria’s head snaps up. “You wouldn’t—” “I just did,” Kieran says. He doesn’t yell. He doesn’t roar. He says it quiet. Final. “You are banished from Blackwood land, Victoria. You are banished from my sons. You are banished from my Luna. “You have one hour to leave Wyoming. If you return, if you send spies, if you breathe near my family again…” He steps up beside me. Shoulder to shoulder. Equals. “I will do what I should have done five years ago. “I will choose them.” Silence. Then Victoria laughs. It’s ugly. Broken. “You stupid boy. You’re throwing away 300 years of tradition for a w***e and her—” I move. Faster than anyone expects. Faster than an omega should. Scalpel. I had it in my scrub pocket. Force of habit. I press it to her throat. Not deep. Just enough to make her feel it. To make her blood well. “Last warning,” I whisper. “Call them that again. Call me that again. I’m a surgeon, Your Majesty. I know 17 ways to kill you before you hit the ground. And Council law says Luna-defense is legal.” Her eyes meet mine. She sees it. Omega’s Shield. But it’s not up. I don’t need it. Because I’m not hiding behind it. I’m the weapon. “Get her out of here,” Kieran tells Ryker. “Now.” Ryker and two Betas grab Victoria. She doesn’t fight. She can’t. She’s staring at me. At the scalpel. At the woman she told to handle it five years ago. “Take the boys inside,” I tell Kieran. My voice shakes. Just once. Adrenaline dump. “Kade needs his inhaler. Kai needs—” “I’ve got them,” he says. And he does. He takes Kade from me. Gentle. So careful with him. Kade doesn’t cry. He just wraps his arms around Kieran’s neck. Daddy. Kieran takes Kai’s hand again. He looks at me over Kade’s head. Silver eyes. King eyes. Mate eyes. “I chose you,” he says. For everyone to hear. “Five years too late. But I choose you. Every time. From now on.” He walks past the Council. Past the Kings. Past his mother. He doesn’t look back. He carries my sons into Blackwood House. And I follow. Not behind him. Beside him. The Luna Who Doesn’t Kneel has entered the kingdom.
