CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: Both or Neither

1330 Words

Aria’s POV Kai wakes up at 3:17am. I know because I’m awake. I’ve been awake since 5:47am yesterday — 22 hours ago — when this nightmare started. His eyes open. Ice-blue. Clear. Kai. Not wolf. Not stuck. Him. He doesn’t ask for water. Doesn’t ask where he is. Doesn’t cry. First words: “Is Kade okay?” My throat closes. Kade, asleep on Kieran’s chest, jerks awake like he heard his name through skin. Like twins do. “Is Kai okay?” Kade mumbles, instantly. Not even awake. Reflex. Twins. “Yeah,” I whisper. To both of them. “Yeah, babies. You’re both okay.” Kai turns his head. Sees Kade. Sees Kieran holding him. Sees the IV in his own arm. He blinks. Slow. “’S my fault,” he says. Hoarse. “I shifted. I let the bees in.” “No,” Kieran says. Instant. Fierce.
