Unveiling the Past

1158 Words
The next morning, Isla wakes up feeling a sense of calm she hasn’t experienced in a long time. The decision to meet Ethan had been hard, but it was the right one. There’s a shift inside her, like something inside her is finally starting to heal. She gazes out the window, her thoughts drifting to him. “One step at a time…” she whispers to herself. Her phone buzzes, interrupting her moment of reflection. It’s a message from Ethan. “Good morning, Isla. I’m really glad we spoke yesterday. I’ve been thinking about you a lot, and I hope you’re okay.” Her heart flutters slightly, and for the first time in a long time, she smiles at the screen. It’s a simple message, but the words are enough to bring a sense of reassurance. She replies quickly. “Good morning. I’m doing better. I think... we both have a lot to figure out, but I’m willing to try.” She hits send and takes a deep breath, feeling the weight of the words. Trying—it’s a word that carries so much hope, but also so much uncertainty. --- At Ethan's Office: Ethan sits in his office, his fingers tapping nervously on his desk as he waits for Isla’s reply. When her message comes through, he reads it slowly, savoring each word. He can feel the tension in his chest ease just a little. She’s willing to try. That’s more than I expected. He smiles to himself, but then his thoughts darken. As much as he wants to move forward, he knows that their past still lingers between them like an invisible wall. I have to tell her everything, he thinks. He picks up the phone and calls his sister, Mia. “Mia, I need to talk to you about something important. It’s about Isla.” --- Isla’s Office: Later in the day, Isla walks into her office, feeling a slight sense of anxiety. The air between her and Ethan is still thick with the weight of their past, and she can’t help but wonder if it’s too soon to start rebuilding something that was broken so completely. She shakes her head, trying to push the doubts away. Her assistant, Lily, enters her office with a stack of papers. “Isla, you’ve got a lunch meeting today. You’re meeting with a new client.” Isla nods, pulling herself back into professional mode. “Thanks, Lily. I’ll be ready.” As she prepares for the meeting, her phone buzzes again. It’s another message from Ethan. “Isla, I’ve been thinking about the conversation we had yesterday. There’s something I need to tell you about my past. Something you should know before we move forward.” Isla’s heart races at the message. She feels a knot form in her stomach. What is he not telling me? She takes a deep breath, forcing herself to stay calm. She replies: “What is it, Ethan?” --- Ethan’s Past: Later that evening, Ethan calls Isla to set up a time to meet in person. He insists that it’s important, and Isla agrees, feeling an unease settle within her. They meet at a quiet café, away from prying eyes. The moment Isla steps into the café, she spots Ethan sitting in the corner, his posture tense. He stands up as she approaches, his face serious. “Isla, I... I need to explain something to you. Something that’s been weighing on me for a long time.” His voice is softer than usual, almost hesitant. Isla sits down, looking at him, waiting for him to continue. She doesn’t know what to expect, but the tension in the air tells her that whatever it is, it’s not easy. “When we were together before, I didn’t tell you everything. I kept secrets—things from my past that I was ashamed of.” Ethan pauses, taking a deep breath. “I wasn’t always the person I am now. I did some things I regret, things I thought would protect me from... from getting hurt again.” Isla’s brow furrows as she listens closely. “I was married before,” Ethan continues, his voice steady but raw. “To someone else. It was a mistake, but it happened. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to hurt you, and I thought it was in the past.” Isla’s mind races. He was married? A thousand questions flood her mind, but she forces herself to stay composed. “And why are you telling me this now?” she asks quietly, her voice trembling slightly. Ethan looks directly at her, his eyes full of regret. “Because you deserve the truth, Isla. I don’t want to hide anything from you anymore. I want to be honest with you, even if it means you walk away.” --- The Moment of Truth: Isla takes a deep breath, trying to process everything he’s just revealed. A past marriage? Secrets? It feels like a lot to absorb, but something in his eyes makes her hesitate. Is he telling me this because he wants to build something real? Or is this just another way to keep me at arm’s length? “I don’t know what to say, Ethan,” Isla finally says, her voice soft but firm. “This is... a lot to take in. I don’t know if I can just forget about this.” Ethan nods slowly, his face reflecting the weight of his words. “I don’t expect you to forgive me right away. But I need you to know this was never about you. It was about my fear. And I’ve been running from it for too long.” For a moment, they just sit there, the silence heavy between them. Isla looks down at her hands, trying to steady her thoughts. She’s hurt, but there’s also a part of her that understands. She feels conflicted—Can I really move past this? Ethan’s voice breaks the silence again. “I’m not asking for your forgiveness right now. I just wanted you to know the truth. Whatever you decide, I’ll respect it.” Isla looks up at him, her expression unreadable. “I don’t know what to decide yet.” She stands up slowly, giving him a long look before she walks out of the café. As she leaves, her heart feels like it’s being torn in two. --- Isla walks into the cool evening air, her thoughts swirling with everything she’s just learned. A past marriage? Secrets? She shakes her head, trying to make sense of it all. She’s not sure if she can trust him again, but the truth weighs heavily on her. In the distance, Ethan watches her leave. He knows the road ahead will be difficult, but he also knows he has no choice but to face his past if he wants a future with Isla. ---- To be continued.. ....
