The Edge of Everything

Lina POV The sky above the cliffs stretched wide and cloudless, lit by the sharp blaze of a late spring sun. Dozens of dragons lined the high ledges, their scales shimmering under the light, wings twitching in anticipation. The air crackled with magic, heat, and the thrill of flight. And pressure. So much pressure. I stood a few paces behind Dylan, the wind teasing the hem of my skirt, my heart pounding like a war drum. This was the clan fly—a tradition older than the ridge we stood on. A demonstration of unity and strength, where our dragons took to the sky in a sweeping show of dominance and pride. And this year, it was more than ceremony. It was politics. Tension buzzed beneath every smile. Witches to the west. Vampires in the shadows. Border raids. Breaches. Threats. The elders wanted fire. They wanted assurance. They wanted to show the world the Blackridge Clan was still strong. Still whole. Still led by a true Alpha and Luna. Dylan stepped forward, his voice rising effortlessly above the wind. “My brothers. My sisters. My blood.” He looked regal in black flight leathers, the golden sigil of our clan stitched across his chest. “We gather not just in tradition, but in defiance. We’ve seen threats at our borders. Whispers of witches. Teeth of vampires. Enemies clawing for our land, our legacy. Let them look to the sky today and see what we are.” His gaze swept across the ledge, meeting every eye. “Let them see we fly as one.” A roar of approval shook the stone beneath our feet. He turned slightly, just enough to glance back at me. And then the smile twisted. “Of course…” he drawled, his voice tinged with syrup and spite, “we’d be remiss if we didn’t let our dear Luna lead the way. A gift to our enemies. And a sign of our strength.” Every head turned toward me. My stomach dropped. The air went still. “Lina,” he said sweetly. “Show them what legacy looks like.” I could barely breathe. Heat rushed up my neck. My ears rang. The cliff blurred. This wasn’t a gesture of faith. It was a trap. A performance. A test he knew I’d fail. I took a hesitant step forward, the edge of the cliff yawning wide before me. My pulse thundered. I could feel eyes on me—curious, expectant, some sympathetic, most not. I closed my eyes, inhaled deeply. Please, I whispered inside. Just once. Please shift. I reached for the fire inside me, the part I’d begged to ignite for years. I imagined wings. Talons. The power that was supposed to live in my blood. Nothing. I kept trying. And trying. The wind picked up. A few dragons began to murmur. Someone cleared their throat. I could feel Dylan smirking behind me. Please… Still nothing. Minutes passed. Then maybe hours. I felt tears sting behind my eyes—shame crawling up my spine. And then—shove. The world tilted. The wind ripped a scream from my throat as my feet left the stone. I was falling—air screaming past my ears, the cliff racing away above me. I tumbled, helpless, limbs flailing. The scream kept rising—raw panic tearing through me. I was going to die. I was going to die in front of everyone. In front of him. And then—just before the darkness could swallow me— A blur of motion. A roar. And arms caught me—strong, unyielding, and wrapped in the scent of ash and something ancient. We soared upward—fast, hot air buffeting my face. I gasped, clinging to the figure holding me, my heart beating so fast I couldn’t tell where I ended and the fear began. Above, I caught the briefest flash: Dylan, yelling. Laura, hands lifted in mock surprise. And then we were gone—into the sky. Away from the edge. Away from the fall.
