By noon, we’d changed into swimsuits and headed down to the pool. The water was perfect, heated to just the right temperature. The sun felt warm on my shoulders as I jumped in, and the cold water cleared my head. When I surfaced, Erica was sitting on the edge, her legs dangling in the water. She was wearing a black one-piece that showed off the curves I’d been trying very hard not to stare at all morning. “Coming in?” I called. She smiled and slid into the water with a soft splash. We swam together, not saying much, just enjoying the silence and the sun and each other’s presence. Every so often, our hands would brush underwater, and I’d feel that spark of connection.
