The morning sun was coming through the white lacy curtains in Tegan's room. Despite what most humans depicted in storybooks, not all fairies lived in trees and were completely tiny all the time. Though they did have the power to shrink in size when they needed to. In Tegan's realm there were not any humans, she lived in a Fey realm called BlueThistle. It was full of a wide variety of different fairies and their respective kingdoms. Tegan was next in line for the throne of Golden Wings Kingdom. The only child of her mother and father she was constantly reminded of how it was her duty to carry on their bloodline.
Her family was one of the oldest and most powerful among all the kingdoms. Tegan was not evenly fully aware of all her powers yet. Fairies don't receive the full extent of their powers until their twenty-first birthday and hers was still another month away. Being a princess had some perks but lately it didn't feel like that. Week after week her parents were pushing suitor after suitor at her. It was obnoxious how much they kept pushing. Some days she wished she was a common fairy without all the pressure.
Today she was scheduled to meet the suitor from the Whispering Leaves Kingdom. All the fairies from that kingdom dealt with the changing of the seasons. Specifically the fall season, it was their magic that allowed the leaves to change colors in the fall. It was the first meeting she was actually looking forward to as fall was her favorite season. Tegan stood from her bed and stretched. Her long iridescent wings with gold edges fluttered out as they stretched along with her. She had a small petite frame and was as pale as a new moon.
Her eyes were incredibly unique even by fairy standards. Most fairies had bright unusual colors like purple, sky blue or a meadow green. Tegan's eyes were actually gold, apparently her great-great-great something grandmother had the same exact eyes and it was legend that golden eyed fairies are very powerful. As she walked around her bedroom, little flowers sprung up from the ground with each step. It was one of the powers she had discovered a week ago. They were all sorts of different varieties and colors.
Since discovering that particular power her bedroom floor looked the a flower garden. She hadn't quite figured out how to control her powers yet. Every time a new power presented itself you had to practice with it to learn control. Once a week there was a class she and several others attended to help each other learn how to control these powers. All classes were taught by the elders and were an all day event. Tegan finished dressing in a causal blue dress and flittered down to the kitchen for some breakfast.
She was dreading the lecture she knew she would get from her mother about the disastrous date she had been forced to go on. Her parents were constantly arranging for her to meet with suitors and setting her up on dates. Last night the suitor selected for her was Oliver Fyre. An arrogant fire fairy who tried to shove his tongue down her throat at the end of the night. She shuddered at the memory, her mother had really wanted that date to work out. She was getting panicky about how Tegan still did not have a mate. When she tried to argue that other girls didn't have their mate yet either her mother always reminded her "they are not the princess Tegan."
She hated the rule that she couldn't try to find her own mate. Just because she was royalty. Her best friend Sara could date whoever she wanted since she wasn't royalty. Sometimes she wished she could rewrite the old rules. Tegan grabbed a small handful of nuts and berries to snack on and went out to their garden in search of her mother. She took a deep breath before entering the garden and straightened up. Her mother was seated at a small table with her traditional cup of morning tea.
