Chapter 15: Fighting the Urge

701 Words
The morning after the power outage, I arrived hours before my usual time, hoping to ground myself in my work before Elias appeared. The entire executive floor felt different, not because of the power outage of last night, or the sound of the servers, but with the memory of physical contact. The professional look on my face felt brittle, ready to c***k at the slightest trigger. I couldn't shake the feel of his chest, the strong grip of his hands, the heat of his breath when he spoke to me. I worked long on the VTI reports, using it to help build a temporary wall around my thoughts. But I remembered his eyes, wide, protective, and intensely focused only on me came up almost every time I blinked. Around 10 in the morning, the door to Elias’s private suite opened. I didn't look up, but the change in the air told me he was there. He walked past my desk to retrieve something from the communication station, and I kept my head down, pretending I was so engrossed in the reports I was working on. "Clara," he said, his voice just low enough to require my attention. I lifted my eyes slowly. "Elias." The eye contact took me by surprise. It was long enough for the memory of his hand on my back to flash between us, a shared secret that choked the professionalism of the space now. His gaze on me was steady, acknowledging the incident without apology, showing that both emotions were still fresh from the night before. We spoke only in strained, formal exchanges throughout the morning about the integration strategy. But every interaction was a near-miss. When he dropped off a revised spreadsheet, his fingers brushed mine as I took the paper. It was a minimal contact, but it sent a sharp, involuntary tremor through my arm that I hoped he didn't notice. Later that afternoon, he asked me to bring a detailed status update. I walked into his suite, my internal alarms screaming. I stood across from his desk, giving him the brief for our overseas markets. He remained seated, but as I finished, he didn't immediately dismiss me. "That's thorough work, Clara," he said. The silence that followed stretched out, suffocating the room. It was longer than any professional pause should be. He wasn't waiting for a comment; he was waiting for something else. His gaze felt heavy, moving slowly from my eyes down to my mouth, and then back up again. He was deliberately examining me, and in that protracted moment, I knew he wasn't looking at the Director of Integration. He was looking at the woman he had held against his chest last night. I shifted, gripping my presentation folder so tightly. "Thank you, Elias. I'll continue putting together the historical debt figures now." I started to turn, needing the immediate safety of the exit. "Wait." He finally stood up, moving slowly, until he was standing beside his desk, far closer to me than necessary. My pulse hammered against my ribs. He didn't reach toward the corner of the whiteboard beside my shoulder, picking up a dry-erase marker. The scent of his cologne enveloped me. I could feel the residual heat radiating from his body. "I see the numbers are perfectly ordered," he said, his voice dropping slightly, the sound resonating only between us. "But don't let the need for absolute control consume you, Clara. Remember we both chose this life because we need solid ground. But sometimes, you have to let go of the reins." The unexpected reference to our vulnerable conversation at the dinner, the acknowledgment of the deep, personal bond we had formed was touching. He wasn't talking about the VTI reports. he was talking about my heart, my history, and the fear that drove me. He was telling me he remembered my truth, even as I was struggling to hide it. “Okay, I won’t” “Good. Well done”, he replied I left his office, my body vibrating with suppressed energy, knowing the distance between us was now a complete lie.The intense physical desire we shared was now linked to the truth we both guarded .
