Chapter 12: Just Call Me Elias

741 Words
I took a taxi to the address Elias sent. It led me to a quiet restaurant downtown with soft lighting. Elias was already at the table. He stood when I approached. It was a small, classic gesture that showed I was meeting with a gentleman tonight. He was wearing a dark, cashmere sweater over a crisp collared shirt. No tie, no suit jacket. He looked relaxed, yet utterly powerful. “You look completely unlike the 70th floor, and that is a compliment." His compliment on my appearance, delivered with such confident ease, made my cheeks flush. "Thank you, Mr Thorne," I managed, sitting down. “Please. You can just call me Elias tonight”, he responded. “Okay. Thank you, Elias”, I said with a slight chuckle. "I know the integration work has been a lot these last few weeks. I arranged this because you deserve a break, and frankly, I think I would prefer something different from the office meals. This is meant to be a relaxing working discussion." He ordered a bottle of wine and poured a glass for himself and for me. I found myself admiring the sharp lines of his profile, the intensity of his focus. I don't think I'd ever seen a man look so utterly in command while completely relaxed. We spent the first hour focused on clearing the legacy contracts. I provided the detailed analysis he needed. My competence matched his demand, making us in perfect sync. “And that's the last of it”, he said, packing up the papers from the table. The work was now over. Elias leaned back, and took his final sip of the wine before turning a bit more. “That's right”, I replied with a smile of relief. “I suppose the change of environment was actually a good idea after” Elias smiles and nods. "So, Clara. Tell me about yourself. What made you choose this life? Not the ambition, but the reason. Why finance, and why here?" he asked, taking a sip of his newly poured wine." I sat up. I felt the need to defend my boundaries. "What exactly would you like to know, Elias? He offered me a chance to be vulnerable, with no professional agenda attached. I relaxed into my chair, letting a small, nervous laugh escape. I realized how much I wanted to trust him, to let him see the messy part of me I usually hid behind my work. "Well. My childhood felt unstable because money always was. One day we were okay, the next we weren't. I chose finance because I felt I needed to take responsibility for where my money is. I built myself to make sure I controlled my money, not the other way around." He watched me, his eyes taking in every detail. "I understand. Instability costs you everything. Your sleep, peace, and control. I saw that in my own house. So, I took over and demanded absolute precision from the world. It’s exhausting, but it’s the price of security. We’re both just trying to make sure we never have to worry about tomorrow's stability." He didn't give much detail, but the brief hint of a difficult past was enough. I found myself thinking. So he isn't driven by greed. Rather it’s a deep need for security that mirrors my own. This understanding from our similarity deepened my attraction. His self-control suddenly became a sign of his vulnerability. I have to say," he continued, gazing at me, "I really respect the way you handled your past. You fight to stand up on your own. That is something I truly admire about you." This was his second compliment to me. And delivered with absolute sincerity. It wasn't some corporate tactic. He was really addressing my identity, not as an asset but a person. "Thank you, Elias," I said, unable to hide the small smile this time. "That means a great deal." "It's just the truth," he replied simply, his eyes meeting mine. "We both work where we do because we choose to stand where the stakes are highest. I say we’re not that different, Clara." Suddenly, we were two complicated people, now connected by a shared panic about stability, both fighting to build a life strong enough to keep the bad stuff out. The rest of the night was lost in conversation, building a bond that felt scary, but still necessary.
