It was the mid-year, a Saturday precisely, the moon shone radiantly in all it's glory, the crickets were chirping loudly and fireflies lit up the bushes, it was a magnificent sight, Lex was sitting on the porch, stroking her cat on the back, staring at the wonders of nature. She was carried away into the abyss of endless imagination, she was away in the galaxies, smiling heartily, just then, at the c****x of her venture, she heard a heavy thud from the corridor close to the kitchen, she ran inside immediately to find her mom on the floor, bleeding from her nose. She was frightened as she had never seen such before, her mother was unconscious, she cried uncontrollably calling her mother several times, but it fell on unconscious ears. She called the emergency number and in few minutes an ambulance pulled up on the yard, she watched as her mother was strung up on the stretcher and taken into the van, almost blinded by tears that profusely poured out of her eyes, she went into the van, with Sansa who seemed to understand the situation, purring slowly and squirming all over Lex.
The beautiful world she saw a while ago, had turned all black, insidious, and full of misery as she watched her mother lie unconscious on the stretcher, with two medics moving over her mother's motionless body busily, she thought of how much pain her mother was feeling as they pierced needles into her veins and the infusions flowed into her body. Lex was void and dark, she wasn't completely conscious of her surrounding anymore, her mind flashed back to the burial scenes she had seen in movies, and could picture her mother in a wooden white casket, she abated the thought and held her mother's hand really tight and said to her, Mum, you're gonna be okay, it's my birthday in a week and you're gonna make me that perfect dress, just open your eyes, I and Sansa miss you already, but it fell on deaf ears. Soon after, the ambulance pulled up at the entrance of the hospital. The ceiling lights were going off and on as her mother was rushed into a run, where a coterie of doctors enveloped her mother all around, Lex tried to enter the hospital ward, but she wasn't allowed, a nurse took her to the waiting room, she was restless as she pondered over what could be going on in the ward.
She sat down in tears as the environ of the hospital felt sickly, the ooze of death and the stench of infirmities filled the air, at a point she was going to throw up, but she swallowed it back in, as she was trying to maintain composure. She straightened up and asked the nurse, is my mother going to be okay? Yes child, she will be fine, but for now, you just have to pray for her okay?? Lex nodded in affirmation.
But she had never prayed before, who am I to pray to, she thought, Jesus?, Budha?, Krishna, she was in utter confusion and just said â Almighty, please don't let my ma die, I'll do anything you want, but please let her wake up againâ .
Soaked in thoughts, she soon fell asleep on the waiting room chair, with Sansa in her hands.
After an hour, she woke up and gazed around, still at the hospital, she said in her thoughts, she went over to the counter and asked the nurse if she could see her mother immediately, Consent was given and she went in to see her mother, there were numerous pipes on her face, in her nose, her arm and her mother still seemed unconscious, Mom? She whispered closely, but it fell on deaf ears still. Just then the doctor came in asked Lex to come Along to his office.
At the doctor's office, she was asked for her mother's details and her's as well and that of any close relative. She couldn't answer wholely, â Sir, I don't have a Daddy, well, none that I know of, Mother used to say that he passed away, and I have no relatives distant and near, it's only I, Sansa and my Ma at the bungalowâ she replied innocently with teary eyes, sympathetically, the doctor assured her that everything would be fine, but Lex could sense a touch disbelief in the doctor's voice.
But what is wrong with my ma, she asked, I'm not supposed to say this to you but I think you deserve not to be kept in the dark, Your mother has the Stage 4 Glioblastoma, she has cancerous cells in her brain, but I'll try my best to make sure she's okay and you all will be a happy family again, the doctor assured.
Lex went home, the night had been a turbulent one , but she was a little bit relieved, the doctor had given her a glimpse of hope with the assurance he gave her. She freshened up, ate and fed Sansa, cleaned the house , took out the garbage, uprooted the weeds and did other chores that she wouldn't do on a normal basis, just to please her ma, incase she came home, to her and Sansa. Night soon fell again and she went off to bed with Sansa.
It was Monday morning, but it felt void because of the absence of her ma, she soon dressed up and plucked the best flowers from the field with pleasant fragnance, laced them together and placed her route to the hospital. It was her birthday in two days time and she would do anything to make her ma feel better again, to sing her the birthday song, just like every other year. She was happy as on getting to her mother's ward, as she saw her mother sitting up and breathing fine, with tears of joy she ran into her mother's embrace and Sansa curled up in the middle, they spent the whole day together, making plans for lex's upcoming 17th birthday and playing games, laughing heartily and when duskdrew nigh, they slept off together, Lex was smiling in her sleep as her ma was feeling much better.
Soon after, it was dawn, Lex took Sansa home and did the normal routine she had been doing the past two days and spent the remaining hours of the day, with her ma, at the hospital, and when it was dusk, she came back home with Sansa, who was always somewhat reluctant to leave her mother's bed side. Finally, it was the D-Day, the Wednesday the little family had been looking forward to; Lex's 17th Birthday. She wore her best dress, and made cupcakes, tied her long black hair, with the most radiant bow in her closet and jerked on happily to the hospital, with a tray of cupcakes in her hands.
Getting to her mother's ward, the atmosphere seemed busy as doctors were trooping in and out of the room, she stood in front of the door and found the doctors with thier heads down, in sympathy and her mother wheezing, in difficulty as she found it hard to breathe, lex's eyes soon got wet with tears as the tray or cupcakes fell off her hands and she ran with alacrity to her mother, calling out to her mother, lex's mother looked her daughter with gasps while struggling for air and She saidâ Happy birthday Lexâ immediately after those words, the struggle for air stopped and the machines made a single continous beep with a uniform frequency, everything seemed quiet, Lex called out to her mother, but no reply came from her ma, she shaked her vigorously, but still her mother laid there lifeless, then it dawned on her that her mother had given up the ghost, leaving her and Sansa all alone in the world which she had no clue of.
Lex cried profusely for days and when it was time to bury her mother, the doctor held her closely and comforted her as they lowered the wooden white casket containing her mother's body into the ground, with a tombstone saying â IN LOVING MEMORY OF WHITNEY ANDREWS, A MOTHER AND MORE TO LEX ANDREWS AND SANSA ANDREWSâ, lex came up with the write up.
