Chapter four: The Cusp

Lights flickered as lex woke up, laid on an iron bed,she felt woozy as she looked around to realize that she was in a theatre for surgery, she leaned up and she felt a sharp throbbing pain on her stomach, there was blood all over her, she noticed she had her clothes changed, she was in a blue surgery gown, with compression stockings on her feet. The surgery gown had an open patch on her sides, the left side where she was having the pain , she opened it to find a stitch on her stomach, she slight short flashbacks of what happened a few hours ago, fluctuated in her head, she was half awake, but she couldn't move, there doctors all around her, and they placed a white pack of powdery stuff inside her, she came to reality as the flashbacks went off. She grimaced in extreme anguish “ What's happening, who's there, Hello,help please, anybody there”? She said in a raunchy tone, her voice had lost it's amplitude as she was in pain. She scanned the room looking for Sansa, her only family, but she was nowhere in sight.

She looked around to find four other manual beds beside her and five manual beds opposite her, all with patients on them, they all had the blue surgical gown on, but they all seemed to be unconscious, her mind flashed back to her mother's final days on the hospital bed, as she lay unconscious, void of life. She decided to get up on her feet, she didn't want to die, it seemed to her that If she laid one minute more on that bed, she'd be likely to die, just like her mother. Determined to overcome the cold embrace of death, she stood up slowly in torment of pain on her stomach as she reached for the door, just then a cold gravelly voice rang in the air saying,” where am I?, What's happening,? Lex turned to see who spake, it was a boy of about, 12 years old, he was not fully conscious of his environment, he got up briskly and immediately he fell to the ground,wriggling in pain with his hand on his stomach, and suddenly he began to jerk like he had a seizure and there was white foamy substances emanating from his mouth, out of panic , Lex ran over to him and in utter confusion she cleaned the foam from off his mouth, but it didn't make anything less worse, she tried getting him to stay calm but all to no avail, she shouted for help, but none came, after few minutes, the boy stopped jerking, and as well stopped breathing, his eye bulged out of thier sockets, his veins surfaced just beneath his face, his face was utterly reddish, Lex put her ear to his chest, to find that it wasn't breathing anymore. She knew he was dead. She couldn't make sense of what was happening, she noticed that the boy was bleeding profusely, from his stomach,she opened the patch on his surgical gown, and saw that he had the same stitches as her's, just that his stitches had ripped and was blood was flowing from it, with white powdery substance around it. Lex was in total awe, as she tried to touch it, it was the same powdery stuff in her flashbacks, ‘’ oh my word, do I have the same stuff inside of me? Am I going to end up jerking to death just like this poor boy, whose corpse lay on the floor “? Lex asked herself as her hands were soaked in blood from the corpse that lay Infront of her. She was deep in the bottomless pit of regrets, she regretted coming to the big city, her mother had always warned her, but curiosity got the best of her, now she's fallen into the wrong hands and worst of all, Sansa was nowhere to be found, random thoughts and flashbacks enveloped her little mind and she buried in cognitive dissonance, bombarded by different manky thoughts, she fainted and blacked out. “Wake up” she heard a distinctive voice as she was being shaken vigorously by the haggard looking woman.

The Haggard woman helped her onto a wheelchair and steered her into the room, where she lay after she was abducted. “Why're you doing this, what happened to the boy earlier, what did you put inside me”? Lex asked countless times, but the haggard looking woman did not answer her. She helped lex onto the bed and said to her in an ominous voice “ Get some rest, passports starts in an hour”. Before lex could ask what she meant, the haggard lady left the room, leaving the door nonchalantly that it let out a loud bang. In exactly an hour time, the haggard woman came out again and helped lex unto a wheelchair and steered her out of the room, into another room, other people, young and old were present there, all for the same purpose which wasn't well known yet, everyone took turns to get a passport and thumbprint as well. It got to lex's turn, she tried to restrain and struggle not to take the passport, but the haggard woman hit her hard across the face and threatened to harm her, there and then Lex had to cooperate. Afterwards, lex was steered back into the room by the haggard looking woman, in utter silence, she helped lex onto the bed and said in a sombre tone,“ I'm sorry I hit you earlier”. In awe, lex sat up and replied, it's fine, but, I don't understand, what's going on??

Get some rest child.

“ That's the most word, I've heard in the past three days. Please tell me what's going on, or at least let me go.

I can't let you go,they will kill my son, and I can't let that happen.

“ Who,? why?”

It doesn't matter to you, just do as you're told and no harm will come to you, they'll let you go after a while.

“ But what am I here for”?

You work for the boss now, you are his, he owns you, you will travel around the world with a parcel from him to his patrons.

“ Is that the white substance, in my…..

I can't say no more.

Having said that, the haggard woman hurried to leave and then Lex asked her name, Mrs Abott, call me Mrs Abott, and the haggard woman exited the room.

Then it dawned on Lex, that she had been abducted as vessel to transport hard drugs to and from different drug Lords, to different countries and back. This is the definite meaning of misfortune, she said aloud and began planning for escape, “ but first I have to find Sansa. Not knowing that she was in for the worse.

Hours passed, lex couldn't tell when it was day or night as everywhere was covered, there was no windows whatsoever in her room and around the premises. She was feeling better from the stitches as it healed. She exited the room and came into the hallway, the lights still flickering on and off, there were numerous doors on the sides of the hallway, she quietly made her way towards the end of the hallway as she saw a door with the writing “ The Boss” she heard noises coming from the inside, she slightly opened it and peered through the tiny slot, she saw a fat or rather, an obese figure sitting on an armchair, and there were people in the room as well, but she couldn't see their face, due to her angle of view, she heard the conversation ensuing between the obese figure and the other constituents of the meeting.

“ The passports are ready and the vessels are healed, they must be dispatched immediately “ the obese man fired.

No one in the room opposed the obese man, maybe he's the boss, lex thought. Just then the haggard woman, Mrs Abott walked into lex eavesdropping on the ongoing meeting and dragged her back to the room and shut the door behind.

“What do you think you're doing,? Eavesdropping on the boss? Do you know what he'll do to you, if he caught you”?

Lex looked at Mrs Abott with no atom of remorse, and said to her, it isn't fair that I'm here, with drugs in my stomach against my will, so, I don't regret doing what I did earlier, please Mrs Abott help, I need to leave this place, help me, lex was crying.

Mrs Abott left the room and came back with Sansa, this made Lex happy as she cleaned her teary eyes and rushed to embrace Sansa.

“Child, there's no escape, you're in the Lion's belly, you and the others would dispatched by tomorrow, so get some rest” Mrs Abott advised as she left the room.

Unknown to Mrs Abott, lex had planned to escape that day.

In the latter hours, she made for the door as she heard the patrol officer march past the hallway and was out of sight. She tiptoed with Sansa strolling behind her cautiously, she seemed to understand the situation as well. At the end of the hallway, opposite the boss's room, there was another hallway which she tiptoed into, halfway through the hallway, she found another passage way with no doors this time, it seemed like she was in a maze, few steps into the passage she came to a door that read” Exit” at the top, she didn't notice the red alarm indicator at the base of the door. She reached for the knob, immediately her hand came in contact with the door knob, the alarms started blaring loudly that it startled Sansa, fortunately,the door opened and Lex made a run for it, with Sansa behind her,she could hear the hefty bodied henchmen running towards her, she ran as fast as her legs could carry her, after a few seconds she was out in the dark, foggy alley, she could barely see anything, but still she could hear the henchmen behind her, with thier torchlights in the air, she looked back to see if Sansa was keeping up with her pace, but she didn't see Sansa behind. Flabbergasted, she turned back to look for Sansa, she couldn't leave her only family behind, She finally came face to face with the henchmen, one of them with an ugly scary face held Sansa nonchalantly in his gnarly hands, they maneuvered and grabbed lex covered her mouth, binded her hands and feet and took her back into the macabre site, with muffled screams lex was taken back to the Sinister environ.
