CHAPTER ELEVEN BY MID-MORNING OF THE NEXT DAY, HELEN still hadn't come to accept the decision which seemed inevitable in the circumstances: to leave Jerry. The ringing of the telephone ripped into her glum reverie, and she moved like an automaton to answer it. "Helen? This is Liz Kimbrough. How are you?" "Oh ... Liz. I'm fine, I guess." Liz hesitated. "You don't sound very fine. Is your problem the kind that a friend can help you with?" "I don't know. I don't think so." "Try me," Liz urged. Helen needed someone to talk with, and it took no further coaxing to break her down. "Oh, Liz..." she cried. "I'm so miserable! Jerry and I are on the verge of breaking up." "No! Why? What happened? Did the other night have anything to do with it," "It had a lot to do with it." Helen sniffled.
