Lilith’s POV I awoke to a knock on my bedroom door, causing me to shoot up from the nightmare I had been having. I groggily found some clothes and walked to the door. I opened it slowly, the bright hall lights making me wince a bit. On the other side of the door was Lucas and my real father. I offered them a puzzled look, unsure what they could possibly need at this hour. Lucas was beaming at me like a little kid and my dad was smiling subtly. “Yes?” I finally asked, a bit of attitude in my tone. “Well good morning to you too sunshine!” Lucas teased me flicking my forehead playfully. I growled at him, flicking him back. We started going back and forth at each other, bickering back and forth. My father started laughing at us , causing us to stop our little fight to stare at him. “What? I didn’t get to watch my own children grow up! Now I’m watching them fight like they’re still kids.” He was still chuckling, obviously finding our argument amusing rather than annoying. “Well, I’m glad you’re here now.” Lucas smiles, pulling me to him in a side hug. “I’m sure Lilith is too, she just has to get over herself.” He teased me again. I groaned in frustration but didn’t argue any further with him. It wouldn’t get me anywhere, he simply never knew when to quit with me. Everyone always saw him as a meek and shy boy but I’d always known better. He was a bit confusing to me on his personality. There were some people he was this loose and care free with, and others where he was dead silent. Maybe it has to do with our warlock and witch gifts, you never know what abilities you may have. “Well, I actually wanted to discuss the beginning of your training. Someone decided to challenge an alpha.” He paused and gave me a pointed look. “So we will be preparing you to at least survive that fight.” “We can take that asshole.” Astrid snorted in my head. I chuckled out loud at her, she was such a fiesta little wolf. Although, after what she did to an alpha last night, I’m slowly starting to not doubt her. She launched him several feet and could’ve frankly killed him if she were willing to face those consequences. “My wolf seems to think she can handle a scared little alpha.” I told him, still giggling as she kept trash talking Jackson in my head. “I’m sure she believes that, but he is still an alpha and should be considered dangerous.” He cautioned me, acting like a dad. I nodded, accepting the fatherly advice. He was probably right, Jackson may be weak socially and in the terms of making good Ally’s even in his pack, but he is one strong man. An alpha is certainly a force to be reckoned with, but I suppose a hybrid wolf is too. “I think I have so many questions though, this is all so new. I want to harness my powers obviously but..I need to under stand other things first.” I explained, sighing softly. “I have to warn you, there are some questions you may not actually want the answer to honey.” My dad replied, giving a slightly sad look. “This may be hard for me to hear, but I think I need to know.” I coaxed him a bit, wanting answers more than anything. “How about we talk in your room then, not everyone should hear all of this.” He said in a hushed tone, ushering is into my room. I sat down on the foot of my bed cross cross style while Lucas leaned on the wall a few feet away. My dad took a seat at my desk, turning the chair to face the both of us. “So what do you want to know kids?” He held out his hands as if to welcome us to proceed. “What happened to our great grandmother?” Was my first and most pressing question. He took a very deep sigh before speaking, but rather than speak, he did something I formally only thought I could do. A vision began to play in my head, and I knew very well this was a memory of someone. Two tall and muscular men were standing over me. I could tell this had to be my grandmothers point of view, something in me just knew it. They were arguing angrily back and fourth about her. “You can NOT disgrace our pack by marrying a witch!” The older looking man hissed, pointing at my grandmother as if pointing out the loon of the bar. My ever so many great grandfather lunged at his father, losing it on him. There before us in the grass they fought savagely, like rogues over spare meat. They took any chance they could to snap down on the other. Tears clouded the vision and I could hear her begging them to stop. It seemed as though the older alpha was winning, likely moments away from killing his own heir in this vicious brawl. Suddenly everything was glowing with a gold hue and the men were forced apart but what seemed to be her sheer willpower. They both snapped their head to her, black beady eyes glaring intensely at her. The energy placed them back on their feet, but they were trapped. Both tried to move back towards each other but it was as if each had 300 pound weights tied to them ti hold them down. “So she is a witch!” The older Alpha snarled. The look her mate gave her was one full of dispare and heart break. He looked like he had nothing else he could do to try and protect her. Oddly enough, she seemed very peaceful with this new reality. Suddenly she was grabbed, warriors pinned her to the ground, detaining her. She never took her eyes away from her mate, staring at him as long as she could before being ushered away roughly. I knew what was coming next and broke the link with my dad, not wishing to see what would unfold. My great great grandmother in my book died doing something noble, protecting the man she loved. Even though she was not a wolf, she understood and accepted the gravity of the bond. She couldn’t feel that strong pull and yet until the very bitter end she held onto him. I didn’t even want to imagine how all of this felt for him to watch. I wonder if they made him watch his mate be burned alive. That would be frankly unforgivable. Tears welled in my own eyes as I pondered it. “Wow.” Was all I could get out, staring at my dad now. He looked equally upset by what we had watched, it was simply unfair. The moon goddess doesn’t pick mates on accident, there’s always a reason. I’m sure there was a purpose in having such a powerful hybrid. Magical powers mixed with heightened senses and animalistic instincts had to be good for something. “What was that? Why would they do that?“ I whispered, utterly heart broken by the thought of losing my mate despite my uncertainty. “I personally think the alpha was baiting her. Certainly he wouldn’t have actually killed his heir to prove such a frivolous point. Your great great grandfather tried to protect her by saying she didn’t inherit any gifts from her bloodline, and that she was essentially human. That wasn’t much of an improvement in their day, but they wouldn’t have killed her.” He explained, sighing loudly in frustration. “They really killed her then?” Lucas blurted out a bit offhandedly, as if confused by the implications at the end of the vision. “Uh…yeah?” I responded with a raised brow. “So how are any of us here then? She surely didn’t already have a child before all of this unfolded?” Okay maybe he did have a valid point. I looked to my dad now equally perplexed. He chuckled, “Your grandmother was a clever little witch even in her young age. She was actually pregnant when she was killed” he explained. I gasped and stared at him wide eyed. Not only had they killed their soon to be alphas mate, but they killed his pregnant mate. Surely they knew, wolves could smell and hear it very early on when a woman was pregnant. We wouldn’t have picked up on it in the vision because she herself couldn’t sense it, and we weren’t inside her mind after all to know she simply knew it. “So how? How did your grandmother survive?” Lucas pushed, now seemingly more confused. “With magic of course. She cast a spell that protected him during her execution and essentially allowed the fetus to grow using the nourishment of her remains.” He explained in the simplest terms possible. It was starting to make sense to me now, she had been a sacrifice herself not only for the sake of her mate but for their child. She knew if anyone knew the child was born they would likely kill it in addition to her. I would sacrifice myself for my child if I were in her shoes too. “So what happened then?” I pushed on, wanting to fully grasp the gravity of this situation. “Well, the baby was birthed by one of her witch friends, who in turn raised her. However, she too was mated to a wolf. It was as if the moon goddess has been trying to continue these unions for generations. Every member of our bloodline posses magic, and all are destined to wolves.” He shrugged his shoulders, unsure himself it seems, what this all means. “So it’s a cycle. Maybe we are meant to be bound to it until one of us obeys the mating call?” I theorized, though I’m sure he too had already reached this conclusion based on his reaction. “Ah my daughter is in fact as brilliant as I suspected!” He teased, grinning at me. The more I looked at him, the more I could see Lucas in his features. This man felt more like a dad in a few minutes than the one that raised me felt in 18 years. It was a bit surreal to feel this way towards a fatherly figure for me. I simply hoped we could also smooth over all of the chaos. “So I need to be mated and married to my real mate then?” I questioned, assuming that’s where he was going with this entire thing. “I’m a bit unsure if even that will work now my sweet daughter. You’ve already been marked and mated by another man, even if not by your own will. Only time will tell if the moon goddess accepts this Union.” He started, giving me a rather sad look. “However I did something that may allow it.” “And what would that be?” Every time I get one question answered I feel like a new one is instantly brought to light. “I kept you from bearing Jacksons child.” He said simply, as if it was no big deal. “WHAT?” I demanded, not sure if I was angry or impressed in this moment. “I cast a spell so that you wouldn’t bear your diets child with the wrong wolf.” He explained simply. “How is that even possible? I mean I’m so glad I didn’t have his kids don’t get me wrong…but I don’t understand.” I rambled, now just really lost in all of it. “Magic is very powerful Lilith, you just have to learn to harness it. That’s why I’m going to train you. You’re not planning on losing to alpha a**hole are you?” He teased, ruffling my hair. Somehow this made me feel a bit calmer, but I still felt like there was so much more I didn’t understand. Maybe in time everything would make sense, but I was a bit exhausted by this entire thing. I felt myself craving to be best Forrest. Finally I could feel Astrid starting to pipe up. “He would make you feel better little one” she urged me, whining a bit. I knew she was right, and maybe just this once I would allow it. We would be stronger with him beside us, and in this moment I needed my best friend. He was all I had besides my brothers in this pack right now. I shot my dad and Lucas a defeated look, and nodded my head slowly. “I’m going to go find Forrest. I just need time to wrap my head around all of this” I half heartedly explained. “Take your time Lilith, I know this is a lot to take on at once.” My dad offered a sincere smile and then did something more unexpected, he pulled me into a strong hug. For a moment, everything felt okay. He was there and was supporting me through all of my latest obstacles, and it was oh so comforting. Maybe all I needed all along was a supportive guide to understand myself. With that, I scurried off to look for Forrest.
