The Inheritance
Tony looked entirely confused. “I don’t know.”
I put my hand on his shoulder. “Tony —”
Molly said, “Why would Roy leave everything to him?”
himI turned to Mr. Trevisane. “Might we have a moment, please?”
The man glanced at us all. “Very well,” he said, and left.
“You know who this is,” Tony said to me. “What the hell is going on?”
I sighed, looking at the floor. “Molly, would you like to tell this or should I?”
Molly looked furious. “You wish to have the truth come out so badly, then you do it!”
youTony peered at her, then at me. “Jacqui, what’s this about?”
So I told him the story, there in the parlor: how Roy had violated Amelia, forced her to bear Pip, continued to harass and terrify her all these years. How she in turn had hated Pip, beaten and terrorized him.
