Prologue Luna's Pov I never thought I'd die at eighteen, at least not like this, being dragged into the depths of Silver Pine Forest with my hands bound behind my back, two enraged werewolves leading me to my execution. "Move faster," Alaric Kingsley snarled, shoving me hard enough that I stumbled over an exposed root. His identical twin brother, Xavier, gripped my arm with bruising force and yanked me upright. "We don't have all night b***h," Xavier growled with irritation as his voice was colder than the autumn air. "The pack elders will be expecting a report by morning and we need to have something presentable to them." I bit my tongue until I tasted blood, letting the hot tears stream down my face. What was the point of arguing anymore? Three days in the dungeon had taught me that my words meant nothing to the Derek twins, it has never had a meaning ever since I was brought in here to live with them. Five years ago, when my parents died in a rogue wolf attack, Alpha King Derek had supposedly taken me in because my father had once saved his life. What a cruel joke that turned out to be. To the world, he appeared like the cool Alpha, led with courageousness and led with an example but behind closed doors, I was treated worse than an omega, a burden, a charity case, something to be tolerated but never accepted. His sons made sure I never forgot my place. "Remember when we made her eat dirt behind the gym?" Alaric said to his brother, his amber eyes gleaming with disgust underneath the moonlight. "I should've known then that she was capable of murder." "I didn't kill her," I whispered, the same words I'd been repeating for days. "I would never hurt Evelyn, why would I hurt my mother?" Xavier's hand connected with my cheek, the crack echoing through the trees. "Don't say her name, what the heck do you mean your mother?," he hissed. "You lost that right when you plunged a knife into her chest." Evelyn Derek was the Alpha Queen and mother to the twins, she had been the one small mercy in my hell. Never openly kind, but she slipped me extra food when her sons denied me dinner. Left bandages where I could find them after particularly brutal "training sessions." These small gestures were always carefully hidden from her husband and sons. And now, she was dead and found in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor when I returned from school three days ago. "Here," Alaric announced, pushing me into a small clearing. The moon light bathed the space in silver light, expressing the hatred etched into the twins' perfect faces. The Kingsley twins were everything I wasn't and would never be, they were powerful, privileged, and breathtakingly beautiful. Both with midnight black hair and amber eyes that shifted to gold when their wolves came forward. And they were always looking at me like I was nothing but a disease to be eradicated. "Any last words, murderer?" Xavier asked, pulling a silver dagger from his belt. My heart hammered against my ribs. Silver is the only thing that could truly kill a werewolf even a pathetic, never-shifted runt like me. "I found her already dying," I said, my voice steadier than I expected. "I tried to help her and that's why her blood was on my hands. I would never—" "LIES!" Alaric roared, his eyes flashing gold as his wolf surged forward. "You were covered in her blood, holding the knife!" "I pulled it out to try to save her!" Tears streamed down my face. "Why would I hurt the only person who showed me any kindness?" Xavier circled me slowly, the dagger glinting in the moonlight. "Maybe because she finally figured out what you really are. A curse. Ever since you arrived, things have been wrong in the pack." "It's so convenient how Dad disappeared the same day," Alaric added, his lip curled in disgust. "The story about him tracking down enemy wolves is bullshit. You did something to him too, didn't you?" I shook my head frantically in confusion, It was true that Derek had been acting strangely in the weeks before the murder. It's been secretive with phone calls, hushed conversations with Evelyn that stopped whenever I entered a room. But killed? By me? "Mom was watching you," Xavier continued, voice dangerously low. "She knew something was wrong with you. That's why you killed her, isn't it? She discovered your secret." "Get on your knees," Alaric commanded, kicking the back of my legs until I collapsed onto the forest floor. The twins positioned themselves on either side of me. Xavier held the dagger to my throat while Alaric grabbed a fistful of my long brown hair, yanking my head back to expose my neck. "Wait…the pack elders were right about one thing," Xavier said coldly. "Your worthless blood shouldn't stain our territory. You're nothing, Luna. Nothing but a—" A howl pierced the night to distract us, it's distant but distinct which made both twins froze. "That's not one of ours," Alaric muttered, scanning the treeline. Another howl answered, closer this time, followed by a third from another direction. "We need to finish this," Xavier said urgently, pressing the blade harder against my throat. A warm trickle of blood ran down my neck. "Now." Something strange happened and a burning sensation that started the moment the silver touched my skin and spread through my entire body like wildfire. My vision sharpened suddenly, the dark forest becoming clear as day. My hearing expanded, picking up the sound of paws against earth, still distant but approaching fast. "Wait," I gasped, a dizzying rush of strength flowing through my limbs. "Something's wrong, please wait…." "Yeah, you're still breathing," Alaric sneered, tightening his grip on my hair. "The only thing wrong here is that we didn't do this years ago," Xavier added, adjusting his grip on the dagger. The burning sensation intensified, my skin was feeling too tight and my bones seemed to vibrate beneath my muscles. What was happening to me? "Any last words?" Xavier asked, amber eyes cold as winter. I met his gaze steadily, something primal rising within me. "Yes," I whispered. "You should have killed me when you had the chance." A fourth howl split the night, so close the twins flinched. Xavier's grip on the dagger faltered, the blade moving just enough away from my throat. That's when I felt the final snap of whatever had been holding back the storm inside me. My body convulsed, bones cracking and reforming. The twins jumped back, their expressions shifting from hatred to shock to something I'd never seen on their faces before, something has possessed me and I can see the fear in their eyes. "Impossible," Alaric breathed. "She can't be—" "RUN!" Xavier shouted, grabbing his brother's arm but it was too late. Everything happened so fast as my human form gave way to something powerful and ancient, four massive wolves burst into the clearing, surrounding us going after the twins instead, I stood there not aware of my surroundings and leaping away from the Pack, I'll find my escape and disappear from their lives forever.
