It had been the longest three minutes of Kain's life. He wasn't sure what he was looking at, but he had to look.
He had to count the heartbeats in that moment as he watched the girl's eyes droop, as she swayed on her feet and as she gripped the empty bottle of pills in one hand and the edge of the sink in the other for support.
He had to watch.
Maybe if he stood still and watched without blinking, he would freeze the world and it would just be him and the depths of her limpid eyes staring back at him from the mirror. Her blonde hair catching the light just right, the strands looking like reflective waves of light distorted by disturbance on water.
If he stood still and watched, he would capture in his mind the look of confused gratitude almost hidden behind her eyes.
In that moment, he had a confusion of his own. He didn't know if he felt concerned, empathetic or jealous of the girl falling in front of him.
One thing was certain for him. He knew he had to catch her as she fell. Figuratively and literally speaking.
So he lunged towards her and caught her frail body before she hit the ground.
Kain knew he needed to think and act fast as he held the half conscious girl in his arms.
Whatever she took was only beginning to take effect as her eyes were still partially open. She mumbled something incoherent and he just stared down at her. He hesitated, even he didn't understand why he hesitated.
He soon came to his senses and snapped out of whatever daze he had fallen into as he had been watching the girl lose consciousness, so he began compressing her stomach in jerking movements, trying and hoping she would throw up whatever she took. It appeared harder than he expected, since she was already almost out of it. He didn't even know what she had taken and how much.
He had seen the aftermath of an overdose one too many times to recognize the situation. He cussed as he picked up the pill bottle and read the label. Quickly, he tossed it to the side and shoved two of his fingers down the girl's throat.
It took a whole minute before the girl jerked her head and coughed, gagged and heaved.
She vomited the half digested pills along with whatever she had for lunch.
"There you go." Kain soothed and rubbed her back, holding her steady as she continued to heave and cough up vomit.
He watched her till her heaving turned to gagging and whimpering.
"f**k. How much of it did you take?" He was beginning to feel concerned that he may have been too late.
She started to crumble in his arms like a sack of boneless meat. So he lifted her upright in his arms and led her to take a seat on the closed toilet. She was limp and flailing in his arms even as she sat.
He knew the whole place would be surrounded by Fabian's men, and being seen with this female—who was clearly one of Fabian's—alone in that bathroom would raise alarm and he'd be shot full of bullets before he could figure out what was happening. But then again, he'd just witnessed someone overdose on some pills. She may or may not require professional help, he didn't even know how much pills she had swallowed, it was all seeming fatal now, he considered going out for help, but he knew what to expect if he made that move. He just stayed put and hoped she had vomited all the pills.
He looked down at her as her head swayed from side to side, her eyelids fluttering and failing to stay open.
"Hey." He patted her cheeks to keep her awake. "You need to stay awake."
Her eyes lost focus again. "Keep your eyes on me, right here." He said.
It took moments for the girl to recover, though partially, but Kain would take anything at that point.
And then, as if realisation had just come to her, she opened her eyes, raised her hand and struck him across the chest. It was a slow and weak movement, her body was still slightly limp against the toilet seat, almost like she was fighting the drowsiness, her eyes almost wide open now, her pupils were dilated like two deep black holes.
She pressed both her hands to his chest now and shoved him, making him fall on his butt.
"What the..." He muttered confused.
"Get away from me." She slurred, trying to get to her feet. "You have no right to do that. How dare you?" She shoved him again.
She moved past him and glanced at the pile of vomit on the floor, she staggered to it and pulled a towel from the rack like she knew what she was doing and was acting on autopilot, even though her legs seemed like they would give out from under her, she bent over and began to clean the mess up.
She was sobbing now, as she kept on muttering "You had no right to do that." "You should mind your damn business." Anger and maybe fear laced her slurry voice.
Kain just sat there watching her clean her own vomit. When she was done, she threw the towel into the bin and staggered out of the bathroom, slamming the door behind her.
He wanted to go after her, but he stopped himself. He didn't need to know if she was going to be fine. She looked like she would be fine physically, probably very sleepy for the rest of the day, but he wasn't sure about the rest of her. He knew he shouldn't care. He shouldn't have been there in the first place.
But a part of him still lingered on the events that just took place. He was certain she would be alright, thanks to his fast action. She wouldn't have walked out if there by herself if she wasn't going to be.
He knew there was no way he would have left her to die there, even though he knew what a terrible thing it was to be one of Fabian's properties. He wasn't going to imagine what it was like living with a man like that.
Whatever it was, it meant to her that death was the only way out.
Kain found himself walking out and away from the brown eyed girl, his mind completely lost now, he had almost forgotten why he had come up to the house in the first place.
He bumped into a panting and fidgeting Colby on his way out.
"Kain! Great, I found you. Can we leave now?" Colby said in a haste as he looked behind and pulled his brother out with him.
"What? Where the f**k have you been?" Asked Kain. "I came in searching for you." He watched as his brother trembled in what seemed like panic? Or was it red hot fear?
"Yeah, yeah. You found me now, let's scram." The boy was practically running now, pulling Kain along with him.
"Oh Christ. What have you done, Colby?" He asked his brother, concern lacing his voice now.
Whatever he had done, Kain knew they had to leave as soon as possible, then he'd question his brother later.
So they left. They fled Fabian's mansion, and everything that chased them right after was nothing but darkness.
Colby wasn't the same after that day.
All he said to his brother was "They saw me, they'll come after me."
Kain had asked him what he meant, but he didn't explain further.
Nobody really came for Colby after that day, but something about the situation sat badly with Kain. He knew he would have to protect his brother.
One day, Colby packed his stuff and left the manor when things were getting more and more heated with their father. There was no way Kain would let his brother leave and go out into the large, lonely and wicked world all on his own. So he packed his stuff and followed his brother.
No one saw or heard anything from them after that.
