Eddie’s family was loud and rambunctious, but still friendly. I was scared witless the entire time, sitting straight as a rod at the dinner table with one of his siblings laughing on either side. I thought their names were maybe Dawn and Tommy, but I couldn’t quite remember. It all went over my head. Eddie sat across from me, glancing at me apologetically every so often. I just didn’t know how to conduct myself with them. Being quiet felt wrong but every word caught in my throat and refused come out. They were cowering away like scared animals who couldn’t stand to face the enemy. I hated myself for it. Most of the time, I averted my gaze and stared hopelessly down at my food.
