Chapter 002
Elsa’s Point of View
We reached the school after driving for 15 minutes from our house and saw its familiar view. Magnus parked his car in its regular spot before we both exited the vehicle. The moment I exited the car, my best friend Freya wrapped me in a tight hug. Though I initially felt surprised by Freya's unexpected hug, the moment passed until I eventually experienced total warmth and no awkwardness.
As Freya released me, I spotted Magnus standing at a distance, watching us with a gaze that combined longing and another emotion that brought a smile to my face. I didn't plan to, but I found myself unable to stop.
Side by side we strolled toward the school entrance, holding hands with Freya’s arm resting along mine. A bright smile appeared from her as she greeted me. “Morning, babe. I expected you to be late today.
Magnus jumped into the conversation before I could respond because he wanted to make his presence known. “She would have been late if I hadn’t woken her up on time,” he said while giving me a smug grin.
I rolled my eyes. “Excuse me? You didn’t wake me up. My alarm did. I had woken up before you entered my room. Remember?”
Magnus lifted his hands as if he had decided to stop arguing. You were awake, but you were dreading school. I instructed you to prepare fast to avoid being late. Happy now?”
I gave him a look, which he answered with his typical eye roll. A small sense of irritation started to grow within me. The repeated nature of his actions bothered me more than the actions themselves.
The situation made me burst into laughter. Your eye roll demonstrates disrespect because you know it does.
Magnus performed another eye roll while Freya chuckled next to me because she found our exchange entertaining. You’re saying I need to stop rolling my eyes at you? You’ve directed your eye rolls towards me multiple times already.
My eyebrow lifted while a smirk appeared on my lips. You always give me special treatment because I'm your baby sister. I’m your baby sister. You told me that yourself.”
Magnus gave me an irritated look, but my laughter persisted. “Yeah, right. ‘You’re lucky I love you,” he said before pulling me into a quick kiss on my head. I looked at Freya but noticed she was staring at him while her mind wandered elsewhere.
I muttered to myself with a sigh, “Ugh!” Why must you look at him when I’m standing right beside you?
Magnus let out a dramatic gasp while his eyes widened as he looked at me. “What’s wrong? You know it’s true.”
I burst into more laughter at his response and continued joking at his cost.
Freya showed her irritation with our conversation by reaching up to tap my head lightly. “Ow! What the hell? That hurt!” I let out a groan while rubbing the area where she had tapped me.
Freya shot me a sharp look that clearly showed her displeasure. I winced. I would be buried six feet deep if staring could kill people.
You received that because you spoke without thinking first. The wolves have the ability to hear all our actions. You must stop this behavior because it will only bring more wolves your way. She said in a cutting voice devoid of cruelty.
I flashed her a mocking grin. I prefer having you as my best friend over someone who wants to kill me.
Freya made an extended eye-rolling motion that matched Magnus' earlier performance. You need to reduce the frequency of your eye rolling. It’s disrespectful.”
You never complained about my eye-rolling, so I’ll keep doing it.
Her glare grew stronger, yet I noticed a tiny smile forming at her mouth corners. I find it hard to accept that I am your best friend, Elsa. Every time you say something stupid, I should give you a good headbutt.
I scoffed dramatically. “You’re a great friend.”
Magnus burst into uncontrollably loud laughter since he was observing us the whole time. Our glares at him failed to stop his laughter because they only made him laugh even more. He found our argument amusing, which surprised us both.
Freya whispered to herself about getting a headache from us while her smile revealed she secretly enjoyed our exchange.
“Freya, don’t stress about it because I’ll keep that in mind.”
Magnus wiped away a tear while his smirk remained intact from his uncontrollable laughter. “You can’t do that, Cy. You hold the position of my baby sister and twin. I hold the privilege to tease you because you're my baby sister and twin.
I teased him about keeping his secrets safe from everyone else while watching his shocked expression.
Magnus opened his eyes wide, and I noticed panic appearing in them. “You can’t do that! No way!”
I savored the power my threats had over him while maintaining my evil grin. I haven’t exposed your secrets yet because you’ve teased me so much. My love for you has kept me from speaking up.
Magnus pulled me close with a tight squeeze while his arm wrapped around my shoulders. “Lil sis, I can’t imagine loving anyone more seriously since Magnus showed genuine warmth when he said these words. My place in your life is irreplaceable.
A sudden inability to breathe made me gasp. “I can’t breathe, Magnus!”
He quickly stepped back while his face showed signs of embarrassment. His cheeks became ghostly tinted with pink, which made him look that adorable; for a moment, I almost acted on my impulse to give them a pinch.
He saw my reaction and quickly said, “This time I really let myself go.”
I returned his smile while attempting to conceal my laughter. “Where’s Lila? I can’t see her anywhere. Did she make the choice to stay away today?
Freya scrunched her face into a frown while her eyes focused tightly on the crowd. She never misses a day of school without fail. She spends all her time working to keep her ‘good girl’ image before everyone. Lila exploits Magnus since he misses her true objectives.
I shared Freya’s frown because I didn’t fully accept her perspective on Lila. “She’s not that bad, Freya. Your brother receives genuine love from her. You can’t deny that. We lack complete information about the situation. We should avoid making quick judgments about people.
Freya looked at me with doubt because my words failed to convince her. Elsa demonstrates too generous concern for other people. You always put others first, but that’s just how you operate. One day, it might hurt you.”
I found myself at a loss for words when Freya said that. I desperately wanted to reject Freya’s words, yet part of me stood fascinated by whether she could really be correct. I decided to remain silent at this moment.
My thoughts were interrupted by Freya’s voice before I could reply. Lila and Rupert stand together over there. Few other than Freya can say for sure, but it looks like Lila and Rupert must be kissing.
When Freya said Rupert’s name, my heart tightened in pain. I fought to believe he didn’t share my feelings and that I would never be his, but watching him with Lila reopened all my wounds. My chest tightened with pain while my wolf, Lyra, began to move restlessly within me.
My eyes watched them against my will. An arm's reach from the school entry, Rupert came to grips with Lila while she rested close beside him. They held each other tightly while their eyes met as though they existed alone in the world. His eyes radiated love, which caused my heart to shatter once more. It had to be true they belonged together, so I needed to come to terms with that truth.
Lyra's howling echo inside my thoughts matched the chest pain I felt. The moment Rupert kissed Lila felt like a sharp blade twisting through my soul, which made me desperately want to look away. But I couldn’t stop myself. Each time I saw them together, I felt acute grief because they possessed what I’d forever lost.
Despite my effort to divert my gaze, the tears came threatening my eyes. Every ounce of this pain surged through me since it toppled above every other injury, and I found no relief from its crushing hold. Her growl became louder, but my own control barely lasted.
I forced myself to look away from them because I needed something to distract me. I looked around for something else to focus on and spotted Magnus talking to Freya while they both laughed. The sight of them sharing mutual happiness brought me comfort.
A throat-clearing sound came from my side at that moment. I turned around startled to see Carter Nolan Ashbourne, who would become Shadowridge Pack’s future Beta and who Lila stated was her older brother, there grinning warmly.
“Hey, Elsa. Good morning. "How are you today?" Carter asked him in his always tranquil voice.
I managed to produce a tiny smile while my chest remained tight with tension. Carter’s eyes created an unsettling feeling within me. He hadn’t done anything wrong, yet his gaze made me feel uneasy every time he looked at me.
Magnus picked up on my unease because he released a cautious low growl when his eyes hardened as he scrutinized both Carter and myself. I held Magnus’s arm to show him everything was fine but noticed he remained skeptical.
“I’m good, thanks for asking. What’s up, Carter?” I answered him while maintaining a relaxed tone.
Carter shrugged. “Not much. I chose to spend time with Rupert and our group members. Today I had no tasks to complete.
I gave a nod while attempting to push away the heaviness of his words from my mind. I directed my attention toward Magnus while my concentration moved away from Carter. “We should get inside soon. Classes are about to start.”
After looking at her watch, Freya agreed. “Yeah, you’re right. We should go. Lila will join us later on.
Magnus felt we needed to leave, so he put his arm around my shoulders and guided me toward the school entrance. “We’ve got to go. See you later, Carter!”
The feeling stayed with me during our departure, prompting me to suppress it while I concentrated on surviving today's tasks.
