THE MĀORI PATUPAIAREHE PATUPAIAREHE ARE ALSO known as turehu, or pakepakeha. They have magical abilities and are not fairies but wood spirits who will torment those who disrespect the woods. Patupaiarehe hate the sun. They appear at night as short humans with blue or green eyes, red hair, and fair skin. They eat raw meat, are repulsed by cooked food, and scared by fire. The patupaiarehe lures attractive women by playing bone flutes. Māoris with patupaiarehe traits are called Urukehu and were believed to be the product of a woman lured by a patupaiarehe. Patupaiarehe know many things, and the Māoris gained some of their knowledge.
