THE NOPPERA-BŌ IS A disguised magical fox, or a tanuki, or a non-dangerous ghost who just wants to scare people. Disguised creatures can be identified by hair protruding from their Noppera-bō costume.
In Hawaiʻi, a 1959 Honolulu Advertiser newspaper article reported a Noppera-bō, who was called a Mujina, was witnessed at Oʻahu’s Waiʻalae Drive-In Theater. Since then, Hawaiʻi’s locals called the Noppera-bō a Mujina, and she’s become a beloved entity.
The drive-in theater has closed down, but witnesses claim the Mujina moved to the shopping mall across the street.
