SOMEWHERE IN OʻAHU’S Kaimuki district is one of Hawaiʻi’s most haunted houses. Newspaper articles, police reports, and local stories about the house include families fleeing in the dead of night; a husband killing his family, then burying them in the backyard; and a heartbroken admirer who killed a lesbian couple, then committed suicide.
Many say a Japanese kasha lurks at the house. Kasha means “burning chariot,” and the creature is a humanoid cat demon who takes mortal souls to hell in its fire cart. Similar to a ghoul, the kasha eats humans and lingers at funerals or cemeteries for corpses. The connection between the kasha and the Kaimuki house was lost in time.
