In the 1950s, during pre-statehood Hawaiʻi, military friends swam in an Oʻahu pond. One slipped while diving from a waterfall, hit his head, and fell into the water. His friends swam to him, but the water was murky and they couldn’t find him.
Splashing erupted nearby.
Their friend’s shoulders broke the water’s surface.
They swam for him, but the pond reclaimed his body.
The soldiers couldn’t find their friend and went to the police.
A police sergeant familiar with drownings in the area sent divers and dredged the murky waters. The rescue team did their best but ran out of daylight.
The officers called it a day, but the diver’s friends wanted to stay. The police wished them luck and took the path back to their vehicles.
