BUNYIP MEANS devil or evil spirit, but these monsters are also called dongu, yaa-loo, and wowee-wowee. They appear as a seal, hippopotamus, or reptile, with claws and feathers. They have magical abilities and dwell in watering holes, eating animals or humans who get too close. Aboriginals believe the bunyip was a man from their time of creation who ate his totem animal, breaking the Rainbow Serpent’s law. THE OUTLINE Inspired by folklore A hunting party knew a creature inhabited the watering hole, but the oasis beckoned them from the barren outback. At the bank, something pounced from the water and ate a hunter. The others woke from their shock and killed the creature. They dragged the creature’s twenty-eight-foot-long body ashore, traced its outline on the ground, and named it bunyip
