NIGHTMARCHERS WERE the ghost procession of Hawaiʻi’s aliʻi and warriors. If your paths cross, they’ll kill you and you’ll join them. Hawaiians called them huaka‘i pō. Huaka‘i means parade or procession. Pō means night. They announce themselves by beating drums or blowing conch shells. They are one of Hawaiʻi’s most active supernatural beings and deadliest. Animals sense them before they are heard, and they’ve been encountered by people regardless of ethnicity, age, and education. If you hear them, it’s best to leave. If your ancestor is with them, they will protect you. If you don’t have an ancestor among them, avoid looking at them.
