GHOST MONTH IS THE seventh lunar month. It’s considered the most dangerous time of year because ghosts and spirits from the lower realms, or hell, wander the earth.
Ghost month’s origins are unknown and might have started pre-Buddha. Many Asian cultures believe the number seven is unlucky, which could relate to the seventh lunar month being the worst.
Families burn fake money, or ghost money, and paper representing luxurious items as offerings to their departed ancestors.
Businesses provide offerings to ghosts in return for the spirits’ blessings. Theaters reserve their first two rows for ghosts while venues perform old operas.
Nonbelievers respect this as a period of ancestor worship and remembrance.
