THE GOD OF HELL, KING Yama, has two grim reapers, one black and one white. Fan Wujiu, a darker-skinned, black-robed entity, is pushy and coarse. His name translates to “those who commit crimes will have no salvation.” Xie Bi"an is his pale-skinned, white-robed counterpart. He has a long tongue, kind demeanor, and his name translates to “those who make amends will be at peace.” They are Heibai Wuchang, which translates to “black and white impermanence.”
Heibai Wuchang collects souls and are the guardians of the underworld who enforce hell’s rules upon its inhabitants. Temples are dedicated to Heibai Wuchang, and people pray to them for luck and fortune.
