THE LORD OF ILLUSION, Rahu-Ketu, was a shadow demon beheaded by Vishnu while gaining immortality. While the demon was beheaded, his head and body were immortal and became Rahu and Ketu, respectively. Rahu causes eclipses by trying to devour the sun or moon. But since he is a disembodied head, they pass through him. Rahu is forever directly across from his body, Ketu. This transcended to Hindu astrology, which affiliates Rahu with the north and Ketu with the south.
