Crossing Paths

Mia sat in her office working on her laptop. Her official telephone on her table rang; only Patricia had that line. She picked up the call. Patricia said from the other end of the call, “Mr. Hart is here to see you. Should I let him in?” Mia told her to let him in. She dropped the telephone back on the table, exhaled loudly, and focused her attention on the door. She had buried herself in work to avoid thinking about Ryan. She had refused all of Tracy’s attempts to help her get over him, but they had failed. There was a knock on the door. Mia said, “Come in.” The knob turned as a dark, tall man in a suit walked in. “Good morning, Mr. Hart. Please sit down,” Mia said, gesturing towards a chair in the office. He pulled out a chair and sat down on the opposite side of the table. He adjusted his suit and spoke. “I’m only going to say this once. Drop your case against me.” Mia scoffed and said, “Excuse me. First of all, it’s my client’s case. Your son assaulted his daughter, and secondly, how dare you walk into my office to threaten me? Leave now, or I’ll have security escort you out.” Mia said this with her face red with anger. Hart stood up and adjusted his suit again. He walked to the door and held the knob, but before he left, he turned to Mia. “Don’t say you weren’t warned. Many people have tried to make an enemy out of me, but here I am, and they’re nowhere to be found.” With that, he walked out, banging the office door. Mia stayed in her chair for a few minutes. She got up quickly, shut her laptop, picked up her bag after packing a few things, and walked out of the office without a word, ignoring Patricia as she called behind her, asking where she was going. She threw her bag at the front seat, which was out of character for her. She had always been a careful and organized person. She dialed Tracy’s number, put it on speaker, placed it on her dashboard, and started driving. The call was picked up after two rings. “Hello, Mia. What’s up?” Tracy asked from the other end. “Hey, Tracy. Can you make it to the dojang in ten? I need to punch something,” Mia said, her eyes on the road ahead as she drove. Tracy agreed. Her lunch break at work had just started, so she left and drove to the dojang. Upon arrival, she saw Mia training with the punching bag. She walked up to Mia and touched her on the shoulder from behind. Mia immediately turned around, hugged her tightly, and burst into tears. Tracy hugged her back and comforted her. Tracy, being taller than Mia, placed her jaw on Mia’s head as they embraced. They sparred, and Mia left while Tracy went back to work. Those were the perks Mia enjoyed about being an entrepreneur; she could leave work at any time without answering to anyone. She went for a walk. She noticed two guys following her. She immediately quickened her pace, but they were still hot on her tail. She started dialing Tracy’s number as she walked past a man without giving him a second look. Alfred turned and watched Mia as she passed him. He also saw the men following her from behind.
