The sound of Vanessa’s laughter snapped my attention from my father. I glanced into the garage just as she threw her head back, releasing another burst of laughter at something Aliana said. She looked so much younger when she laughed. Her hair swept around her face like a breath of fresh air, making her run her hand through it to push it out of her eyes as she smiled, radiant and alive. And after the emotional roller coaster she had gone through today, she deserved it.
And I got to see that smile for as long as we stayed together. I got to be the reason for the explosion of joy on her face each day. Yet father didn’t think twice before trying to destroy the only piece of happiness I had left in my life.
