A Touch Of Kindness

313 Words
Kallie was sitting in a 24-hr chain restaurant drinking a black cup of coffee to keep her alert. She was tired but didn't want to give herself a chance to relax just in case either one of the men she saw tonight managed to follow her.  Glancing between the three windows around her she finally saw the red orange glow of the sun rising.  Finally, she thought.  She could see well at night while in her current form but it wasn't perfect. During daytime she finally felt comfortable making her way home knowing that her keen sense of sight would help her deter from any unwanted individuals. With the sun rising higher she strolled onto the pavement outside. An older couple out this morning to get their coffee glanced at her trudging on the sidewalk with no shoes and offered to give her a pair of old slippers they had stored in the back of their musty old car.  “Here you go dear,” the frail old woman croaked while her husband impatiently tapped his foot, “your toes must be freezing. What on earth has you running through the streets with no shoes on at this time in the morning?” Instead of possibly putting this kind woman in danger Kallie answered with a lie, “My dog ran out the door when I let her out! I didnt even think to grab my shoes and I just ran after her! I lost sight of her after a few blocks and continued looking but I haven't found her. Thank you so much for helping me!”  The old woman smiled with wrinkled skin and walked to her husband. She whispered in his ear and they both looked back to Kallie and then continued into the sitting area of the restaurant.  Kallie felt that the woman knew she was lying and chose to help her anyways.  Thank goodness there were still good ones in this world.
