VII. May Day at the lake That was a very cold and rainy spring. Stella’s surgery worked very well, luckily. She had to undergo six chemotherapy cycles, once a month till July. Her parents had insisted on having her and her daughter back in London. They were ready to pay her a rent wherever she preferred: Richmond, Greenwich, Hampstead Heath, so they could live in the green but at the same time be next to them. Stella refused categorically, she was scared the city was too polluted for her weak body and she didn’t want to jeopardise her daughter’s health too. She actually recognised that Reading’s air wasn’t very healthy as well, but it seemed she had finally found somewhere to live peacefully in Sonning Common.
