CHAPTER 4.

As Vianca and I approached Gloria, determined to uncover the mystery behind her academic decline, we could see the worry etched on her face. With a mix of curiosity and concern, Vianca took the lead and approached Gloria, hoping to convince her to open up about her struggles. "Ah, Gloria, my dear, we come bearing concerns and a slight desperation to unravel the enigma that haunts your academic journey," Vianca pleaded, trying her best to sound dramatic. Gloria, taken aback by Vianca's theatrics, raised an eyebrow and replied, "Vianca, my friend, I appreciate the concern, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to spill all my secrets just yet. Can I have a moment alone with Linz, please?" Vianca, pretending to be wounded, dramatically placed a hand over her heart and gasped, "Oh, the betrayal! Fine, fine, I shall grant you your secret moments with Linz, but beware, we shall have a grand interrogation later!" Gloria couldn't help but chuckle at Vianca's melodramatic response. "Thank you, Vianca, for your understanding. Now, Linz, let's have our secret agent meeting, shall we?" Vianca walked away, the air suddenly became heavy with seriousness. Gloria motioned for me to take a seat beside her, her eyes filled with a mix of vulnerability and nervousness. I couldn't help but feel a knot forming in my stomach, unsure of what was about to unfold. "Listen, Linz," Gloria began, her voice trembling slightly. "I need to tell you something, but you have to promise not to tell anyone. It's a secret I've been carrying for far too long." My curiosity piqued, I nodded and whispered, "I promise, Gloria. Your secret is safe with me. What is it?" Gloria took a deep breath, her eyes welling up with tears. "Linz, I... I love you. I've loved you for so long, but I was always too afraid to say anything. I didn't want to risk losing our close friendship." My jaw dropped, and for a moment, I couldn't find the words to respond. This was not the revelation I was expecting. I had always seen Gloria as my best friend, never considering the possibility of romantic feelings between us. Trying to lighten the heavy atmosphere, I awkwardly blurted out, "Well, Gloria, I must say, your secret agent skills are quite impressive! I never saw this coming." Gloria managed a small smile through her tears, appreciating my attempt at humor. "Yes, Agent Linz, it seems my secret identity has been revealed. But please understand, I never wanted to burden you with this. It's just... my feelings for you have made it difficult for me to explore other friendships, especially with boys." I couldn't help but feel a mix of guilt and confusion. "Gloria, I had no idea. I'm sorry if I unintentionally made things difficult for you. Our friendship means the world to me, and I never want you to feel trapped or limited because of it." Tears streamed down Gloria's face as she poured her heart out. "Linz, you've been my rock, my confidant, and my biggest supporter. But it's become so hard to see you as just a friend when my heart longs for something more. I've turned away other potential friendships because I couldn't bear the thought of betraying what we have." I reached out and gently wiped away her tears, feeling a mix of compassion and confusion. "Gloria appreciate your honesty and the trust you've placed in me by sharing your feelings. It takes a lot of courage to open up like this, and I want you to know that I value our friendship more than anything. But, I also need time to process all of this. It's a lot to take in, and I don't want to rush into any decisions or say something I might regret. Can we take some time to reflect on our feelings and figure out what this means for us? Gloria nodded, wiping away her tears with a shaky smile. "Of course, Linz. I understand. This is a lot to process for both of us. Let's take the time we need and remember that our friendship is the foundation of everything. No matter what happens, I want us to remain best friends." I took a deep breath, feeling a mixture of relief and confusion. "Thank you, Gloria, for understanding. Our friendship means everything to me too, and I don't want anything to jeopardize that. Let's promise to be open and honest with each other as we navigate these uncharted waters." Gloria nodded, her smile growing a little brighter. "Agreed, Linz. No matter what happens, we'll always have each other's backs. And hey, maybe we can inject some humor into this situation too. After all, life is too short to take everything too seriously!" After witnessing Gloria's mood brighten a bit, I decided to delve into the heart of the matter and explore the reasons behind her academic decline. With a mischievous grin, I leaned in closer and whispered, "Alright, Gloria, it's time to spill the beans. Who are these mysterious friends of yours, and how did they manage to lead you astray from the path of academic greatness?" Gloria chuckled, appreciating the lighthearted approach. "Oh,Linz, these friends of mine are masters of mischief and champions of laziness. They have a knack for convincing me that studying is overrated and that a life of leisure is the true path to enlightenment." I raised an eyebrow, pretending to be scandalized. "A life of leisure, you say? Well, it seems we've stumbled upon a secret society of academic rebels. Do they have a secret handshake? Or perhaps a secret motto like 'Cramming is for the weak'?" Gloria burst into laughter, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "Oh, if only it were that glamorous, Linz! But no, their motto is more along the lines of 'Why study when you can binge-watch Netflix?' And their secret handshake involves a synchronized high-five followed by a dramatic flop onto the nearest couch." I couldn't help but join in her laughter, imagining the absurdity of it all. "Ah, a secret society of couch potatoes! Quite the formidable group, I must say. But tell me, Gloria, how did you fall under their lazy spell?" Gloria sighed, her laughter fading as she became more introspective. "Well, Linz, it all started innocently enough. I wanted to explore new friendships, and these friends seemed like a fun bunch. But their lack of interest in academics rubbed off on me, and before I knew it, I was caught up in their lazy ways." I leaned back, pretending to be a detective evaluating the evidence. "So, it appears we have a classic case of academic peer pressure. The question is, Gloria, are you ready to break free from their clutches and reclaim your academic prowess?" Gloria's eyes sparkled with determination. "Absolutely, Linz! I've realized that true friends should uplift and inspire each other, not drag each other down. It's time for me to ditch the couch potato society and reignite my love for learning."
